I felt compelled today to bring out the old Garrett Ace 100 and go over some of the yard areas I've hit with the Compadre over the last 10 months. The two machines are similar beep and dig units as were all my prior detectors. I went over a section of the yard about 4 feet out from the back patio. Our home is 1883 so there is quite a bit buried in the ground. The Ace 100 runs smoother than the Compadre with less chirps and pops. I never used it with head phones and actually both units are more comfortable to use without a pair of headphones in our Florida humidity. Anyway I was able to discriminate out virtually all of the trash and but still dug some small pieces of brass and a few old pull tabs. Anyway the old Garrett got a solid hit clean and repeatable in a spot I know the Compadre has been over dozens of times along with a few other folks detecting. Dug down and still got a signal with the Ace so I went deeper. At 5 inches probing with the Pin Pointer I got an on target signal and saw a glint of silver. Of all things a Barber dime worn but you could still read the 1902 on the face. One thing I've noticed is that the Garrett is really good on silver, much more so than the Compadre. Earlier in the day in another part of the yard however the Compadre had nailed a 1974 Jefferson nickel. I'll have to get the Garrett out more often, virtually all of the silver coins on the property have come with it, including a 1909 Barber half dollar last spring that was nearly mint. This hobby is fun and today was proof the more you hunt the same spots the better the finds get as you remove the trash.
