Compadre and those hated sports drink inserts...

REVIER

Well-known member
I saw Tabman's video on audio breakups of trash vs good targets using the silver.
It was great, but I don't use a Silver and I usually don't hunt with any disc at all when I use the Compadre because I have found I gain almost an inch in depth between the knob on the n in iron and all metal.
I also have one heck of a time with those cursed sports drink inserts in the trashy parks I hunt...especially around the basketball courts I have been concentrating on lately.
What to do...

I still dig most signals, and I do thumb that disc, and like the silver if the disc is set right around the area where these foil caps go away, (a hair past the n in iron), they will break up just like in Tabman's video...but the Silver is still a little better at it overall. (Maybe because of the circuitry...or the 120 vs.180 ED?)

Because I hunt in all metal I need a faster way to figure these insert signals out because all that thumbing takes a little time, so after a little experimentation I came up with this.

I turn the coil at a slight angle and scan the target from an area just a little behind keeping the center of the coil aimed at the target in question.
I know that keeping the coil level and raising it higher the good targets usually just fade out without a lot of breaking up like usual on most Tesoros.
I found out that by turning the coil at just the right angle some of the good targets will break up a little at the point just before fade out, but the foil breaks up a lot more.
The good thing is there seems to be very little break up on the two gold rings I tested with the coil level or angled, a fact I am thrilled to learn since gold is my target of choice on every hunt.

I am going out hunting and I will try this technique in the field and report back if it works this way with targets in the ground just as well.
My next experiment will be with the Vaq to see how it does.

interesting concept ill have to try with my compadres

Well, my field experiments went pretty well, you can sort of tell you are swinging over these things in all metal but you have to get the angle and height just right to get them to break up.
I found it was actually a little faster to thumb that knob up to the position just above the n in iron where these come in and do the angle thing high where they break up much more easily.
Still dug several on my hunt just to make sure, but at least I know a little more and can probably walk away from these confidently in the future if I choose to do that.

Also found a few cool things hunting around a large basketball court that I have searched a couple of times before with my F2 and 2 different coils.
Not only a few coins I missed but several nickels, too, and I am a jewelry hunter so even though that pendant and both rings are junk...still cool.
Just love that Compadre...it seems to be able to find good targets no matter how many times those same areas have been hunted.

I've started using my Vaq, 2 weeks ago and have been digging those inserts. They give a solid hit I rarely thumb the disc, I think it quicker to
just dig plus I want to remove as much trash as possible from one particular spot. But am curious how the Vaq will do on your test.

Last weeks gold i dug had a similar shape.I wonder if i would have missed it? if I tried to tell if it was an insert. Keep us posted.

I will test the Vaq soon, but if you come across gold with the Vaq you can usually tell that signal if you listen closely.
Gold is a little longer and fuller signal than most others, slightly different than these foil inserts and even a little different from coins and silver rings.
It is a sweet sound like no other, and once you know it that signal should make you stop in your tracks in the rare times when you are lucky enough to come across it.

Keep it up. "While the tactics used by revier and tabman are fairly accurate, it's better to use them to kinda know what range the target falls in. A smooth, soft tone is usually in the high coin range whereas the "different" signals fall in the tab/foil area. I would have missed 5 nickels at 5" with the 5.75" coil today. I also remember a tiny 10k childs ring that I found with the Silver umax that "skipped" in the signal. Since I can pinpoint with the Silver easily, I usually let my probe do the final analysis.
