Compadre with 8" coil

I am getting a Compadre with the 5.75" coil and found someone with a 8" brown round concentric coil. I am going to put the 8" coil on the Compadre and give it a test, been curious to see if depth would be increased and sensitivity remains as good as with the smaller coil. When I get the Compadre and the other coil and get the time to get the bigger coil installed I will post a picture and let you's know my thoughts on how well it works.

My Comapadre came supplied with a plug in 8 inch concentric, I have not used the smaller coil.
The 8 inch seems to be fine with good sensitivity to small items including some small gold chains and the detector has no trouble finding my test patch targets at 7 to 8 inches deep in light iron mineral ground
Pinpointing is ok to within the center hole of the coil. The coil is fine and I very much doubt that I would change to the 5 inch.

Ever wonder why Tesoro hardwired the Compadre for the 7 and 5.75 coils?
If you only knew by putting on a larger coil performance would be equal or exceed the next model up....why would you then pay extra for the next model up?
Granted the coil connectors would add a some $$ to the price as well as the labor to attach them.........
It would be nice to have the option to remove the coil from the Compadre. As well as to be able to interchange coils, Tesoro could make extra profits off the Compadre
by selling the optional coils. At any rate, the Compadre is what it is, superb performance at a entry level price for beginner or pro who would enjoy and have no problem using.

I do alot of reading on the forums and over the years I have noticed a picture or two of a Compadre with a 8" brown round coil and with a white 9"x8" coil and was always curious how the Compadre would would work compared to the smaller coils. I just picked up a Compadre with a 5.75" coil from someone one the forums and a brown round 8" coil from someone else. I haven't received either yet but when I do I am going to hardwire the 8" coil on the Compadre for the time being to try it. If I can find the right parts and a place to get the parts I will add a female connector to the control housing and a male connector on each coil.

buy the Tesoro "extension cables". It has both male and female plugs. Cost $30 new. Around $15 to $20 used.

You can find them at the bottom of the accessory coil list.

Might go that route, thanks Mike.

Switchcraft connectors
Thanks Sven, that sure would be the nicest option but not cheap, $34.74 in the connectors not counting shipping.

Sweeeet, thanks Randy I really appreciate it. I will pm you my address but let me know what it cost you for shipping its the least I could do. You "Tesoro swinging" people are the best.

If you hunt around you can get them much cheaper.
If you don't mind a different connector:
Switchcraft makes the Garrett style connectors at about half or less than half the price of the ones Tesoro uses.

Or go on the e-site and by 10 sets of the microphone connectors that are also used widely for detectors for only $16.99, with free shipping.

Cheaper model being hotter than the next one up..The Fisher 1210 was an excellent example..By adjusting the sensitivity screw, it would out run the 1220 easily.. For some reason, the 1210 would die for no reason at all.. There was a Fisher dealer in Reynoldsburg ,Ohio ( Kirby) who would adjust your metal detector, and make it a real kicker..He;s gone and the building is not there any more..I , also, heard the 1230 would out run the 1260, with a little tweaking...So, my Compadre (stock factory setting) is about the same as the Silver Umax, again stock.. I opened the Compadre up, and the circuit board seems to be mounted wrong...But, it works......

I have a Compadre with the 9x8 coil hardwired. Great for most tot lots. Down side to the bigger coil: can't get as close to the poles as with a smaller one, in trashy areas the Compadre with the larger coil does not do at all well separating targets.
Sensitivity to small stuff is still pretty good, but a smaller coil is better.
Cheers,

tvr, have you ever ran a Compadre with a 5.75 or a 7 inch coil and if so do you see more depth on the Compadre with the 9x8.

Guys,

The concept behind the compadre with it's one control knob is 'beginer' simplicity, they ground balance it at the factory with a piece of ferrite and call it good for the greater majority of soils. I had a Compadre with the 7" coil, it was OK on depth, but I certainly would'nt change coils on it, you would need a more versitile, more featured detector. One with threshold, GB, sensitivity etc, ON THE FACE PLATE to get a good workable tuning for the coil. I know that you can open up the Compare and change the sensitivity, GB etc. But how handy is that?

Your right but there are always those people that are tinkerers not me of coarse  and just want to know hmm wonder what would happen if I do this or maybe try that.

SkiWiz,
Have not run any other coils on the Compadre yet. I've got a 7 inch that I will need to add a connector to the Compadre to use it. I'd expect between 2 inches and three inches less depth with the 5.75 inch coil based on what I've seen comparing the 8x9 with the 5.75 on the Cibola and Tejon. I've set the sensitivity up on mine. Some of that discussion and quick air test results are at:
