Competition coil ?

Sweepstakes

Which coil would you use on a competitive hunt for color coded pennies with the 705? Ground is unmineralized very dry, hard packed field.

In most competition hunts the coins are buried shallow and speed is everything. With that being said, I would use the 6" DD because I can swing it fast and pinpointing is not necessary with the small coil.

I'm not sure that I would agree with a 6" DD, this coil is typically used to get around trashy areas due to making a smaller field. I have the 5x10 DD that comes with the Gold Pack, that allows you to cover a bigger swatch of ground with not much weight. I understand the thought behind the lighter weight suggestion, but I swing my 5x10" for 6 hours straight on a hunt and it doesn't tire me out.

A DD coil produces a field in a straight line going through the soil like a wiper, a 6" coil produces a 6" field, a 10" coil would produce a 10" field. IMO, this would cover ground more thoroughly and possibly eliminate missed ground.

Such a hunt sounds like targets will be easy to identify as long as you swing over them, the signal should be real strong. A bigger coil would probably be better, but at some point as using a large round coil would probably be too heavy.

A large coil will cover more ground, but also see deeper than necessary. So, I would probably run with the biggest coil in the arsenal, but keep the SENS very low so as to not see a lot deeper than required. You could even play with threshold to knock out some weaker tones, since the desired targets will be strong shallow signals.

I would also run In pinpoint mode if I were you. You will hear a penny a foot and a half away, check the tid numbers to see if they are matching up to a penny also. You can switch back and fourth really quick. This will give you twice the distance with a lighter coil as mentioned above. Penny should be a heavy hitter on the tone and numbers 38-36 I think for mine of I remember right.

I have never hunted in a competition, that being said I would run the 5x10 DD. Very light weight (actually lighter than my 6" DD by a couple of grams) and can be swept fairly fast. Has a forgiving sweep speed and a larger footprint than the 6" coil.

My opinion on the 6 inch vs the 5x10 is based largely on the ease of recovering your target quicker without the need for pinpointing. I have hunted competition hunts before and used a troy x-3 with a 7inch coil and did very well. I have the 5x10 on my 705 and it is my primary coil and it is very light but it is not the quickest for easily pinpointing your targets. Just my opinion and experience, hope you do well with whatever coil you choose. Just remember speed of target location and recovery is the key to success in these type hunts.

I use the 5x10 in competition hunts, nice and light, covers alot of ground and you don't need to use pinpoint, just pinpoint off the front tip.
