Complete Newbe here

I have been given one of these http://tippecanoe.craigslist.org/ele/1459912584.html in full working order, however I have never used a metal detector before. Is there any way I can obtain the user manual or instructions for this, or is there anyone kind enough to assist me?

I will be using it for my job, I am a Drain Cleaner (www.blocksaway.co.uk) and will be using it mainly to locate hidden manhole covers, maybe they have been gravelled over, a patio placed over them and sometimes a conservatory put upon them.

I am also keen to use it just as you do, for the fun of finding things of interest.

Your help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Im new too so thisw may be wrong.. But..
i didnt go to the website but I would contact
the mfg and see if they have copies of the
the manul. Im sure most of the big mfgs do.. iKnow Garret does

The ad says it does not work. Why would you want one that doesn't work? Garrett has no parts for a detector this old. It's at least 30 years old. You can check the Garrett website where you can copy manuals but don't know if they still carry one for your tector.

Thats not my metal detector, I have been given a very well looked after and fully working one, it belonged to my father in law. Its exactly the same as the one in the link, so used that to help you guys ID my detector.

Welcome to the forum!I believe the machine you have is the Garrett American TR S1. I have one that is very similar. Mine is the Coin Hunter VLF/TR, which is a few years older than yours.

You have a very good machine on your hands and should have no trouble at all locating underground manhole covers. Here is a link to the owners manual.

Thanks for clarifying bud. I couldn't figure out why you were buying one that didn't work. Since you got one in working order good luck. Those old TR's will work great for what you need it for. The company that made the detector I started out with way back in 1963 hasn't made hobby detectors for many years but instead makes commercial detectors for uses such as yours. If you ever need a new one go to metrotech.com

My son and I found today :

Bottle tops
some recent lost coins
and old Corgi toy car - like my father would have had
a huge metal bolt


resulting in a son who loves this idea of "treasue" hunting, his smile is worth the weight in gold!!!!
