Considering Safari

Just wanted to see if everyone that has purchased the Safari is liking it. I have an X-Terra 70, and just looking to add one to the arsenal. I'm between the Safari and SE right now. From what I hear the Safari is easier and can be swung faster than the SE. Are they pretty close in depth? I mainly hunt old home sites with loads of iron if this makes a difference.
Thanks in advance

Silverman, I am in the same boat, the last few days I have gone back and forth between Safari and SE. Hopefully some folks will give some insight so I too can make up my mind. I just do not want to wish six months later that I had gotten SE. As of right now the Safari looks to do everything I would need.

Steve

Not used the SE, but my Safari is a great relic machine. I will try some coin hunting this spring and summer so I'll be learning more as I go.

Hi Steve and silverman
I only do beach hunting and with the stock coil in heavy trash it makes lots of noise. I have some parts of the beach that are just loaded with nails and iron parts I have tried to detect with the Safari there and it is not that easy to pick out a good signal. Even tried to dig in there I could not tell if the target was in the hole or in the pile. I do not have a small coil. I know from experience that you must have a smaller coil for trash areas. I am still learning. The Safari has good depth and separation in less trash areas with the stock coil. I had to take the heavy sand scoop out because the depth I was digging target was just wrecking my light sand scoop. I very seldom have a one scoop pick up on targets. These are all targets that have been there since last summer or longer that we missed with other detectors. 80 coins on one small beach is a lot of coins because summer here hasn't even started yet. Me and the seagulls are the only ones out there.
It works great on the 2 beaches I have tried it on but I still have 5 other beaches to try it on. Can't say it is great on all beaches I work on yet.... Z

I was just out 2 days ago around some old cellar holes. If you are considering a safari I would recommend a smaller coil. I found many, many, square nails, and the bigger chunks of metal can overload the machine. Don't let this discourage you as I am still fairly new with the machine, and I haven't been on many cellar hole, or old homestead hunts with this machine. I know the machines can be tweeked. Try to get some more input on the safari. I love mine!!

I've never used the SE but I have no problems with nails using the stock settings on the Safari and then blocking out the +40 value. I love using the Safari but for 1 grand I think it's a bit overpriced. If I was to do it again and was to spend at least that amount I'd pay a little extra to get the SE or E-Trac and get a few more bells and whistles. Just my opinion.

Set up my Safari in auto and high trash Density and my Safari tones better and Will ID better then my SE. There is not one target I have flagged that either one of the machines see better then the other one. The Safari just hits On Edge Targets better on tone and target Id. There is really a differance with on edge targets. The Safari does the better of the two.

All you got to do is get Andy's book On the Quattro read it a few times. Learn how to cross save the conduct to the ferrious side and the ferrious to the conduct side on each of the different modes on the Safari. Now with the push of the two buttons say in the Jewlery/beach mode you have a Conduct mode, push the button below it and you can switch to the ferrious mode with the same parimeters of the conduct jewlery/beach mode only you are in ferrious audio on the targets. You can make your custom ferrious jewlery//Beach mode look just like your Conduct Jewlery/Beach Mode with different tones. There is just all kinds of ways to set up you custom modes and using the Cross Saving that Andy's shows you how to do in his book. I think it is great. THANK'S ANDY

Then you switch back to Conduct jewlery/beach mode now you are back to Conduct audio. Can't get no better then that. Hope I explained that right for you guys and did not confuse you all.
When I cross save I do Dis. out the #40 on each of my custon scales. That gets rid of the Falsing you get when you are in the iron trash. I can't remember what the word is I am looking for. Damn, I hate getting old and I hate getting CRS, that just drives me nuts. Now I know I will think of that word later. It is in the DFX book anyway. Jeff explains it real well. Wrap around. thats it. and I did not have to look it up. :D: :D:

The SE does give you more Info on the target. When you are in the iron trash you just have to make up your mind to hunt with the audio and hope you can isolate the tone and try to get a decent pinpoint Number one of the great things about the SE and pinpoint.

The worest thing my Safari does is, it goes blind in the trash. Screen just goes blank. No numbers or anything and it does a few other things that it has to go back to factory to get fixed but right now I can live with it. I hunt by tone and ID is last thing I try to see so no big deal to me anyway.

If I am going to do some quick fast hunting I use the Safari. I seem to grab my Safari more then my SE. I just like it better especially when I can just change from Conduct to ferrious, or ferrious to conduct in the same mode with just the push of two buttons. No machine will do that as fast as the Safari will. You have no Idea how helpfull that is in the trash and I hunt a lot of iron trash and Alum trash. Well typed to much and I am just a Lurker and hunter and I am just not a Poster like some. I would rather hunt, read and look at the great finds you guys make. Maybe some day I will Post a few of mine.

Water season is here :clapping: :inlove: and the dirt hunting is out, till it gets cold again. You will find me on the beaches and fresh water lakes. If you see a old fat guy bobbing like a cork in the water or on the beach when it is to ruff, stop and say Hi maybe I will have a piece of gold or two to show you. :D: :D: HH Jerry Aka Tinfoil

Hey Tinfoil, nice job as a poster, even if you're just a Lurker and hunter. Your post contains a lot of good info,"with age comes wisdom". I'm glad that I can always learn something from the other guy, much appreciated. I am ordering Andy's book today as I am convinced it must be filled with some good solid advice, judging from the others who have it and have posted about it. Thanks again for the post. Ron(Belchertown, Ma.)

Andy's book is a great learning tool, you'll enjoy it.......You guys are making me envious with the pics of the great finds. Not had much time to hunt lately and the weathers been bad anyway. Learning a lot reading the posts while watching it rain........Supposed to be a nice week end though, maybe I'll fight the copperheads and yellowjackets for a while Saturday.

I am partial to the Safari because I like a simpler machine .... I have made some good fines with it.. The determining factor on the SE and the Safari is going to be how well the person knows his machine (as with any machine). When it comes to the easier targets, both machines will tell you what is in the ground... But in the hands of the right person, the SE is "deadly" I really think that the SE has an edge on the Safari BUT you need to ask yourself, "Am I willing to take the time to learn to decipher what my detecting is telling me WHEN I can't have all the facts?" The Safari has excellent depth, much faster processor than the Quattro, very simply menu, ID is great, turn on and go....if that is what you want, then the Safari is the the detector for you.. On the other side of the coin, SE/E-TRAC just awesome detectors with a longer learning curve, but worth all the time invested...! With either detector, I recommend Andy's Book..... Best to all, Richard

For those considering the safari, It is an excellent machine!! There is a learning curve with the safari as well as with the other two machines. I bought my machine from kellyco in Feb. They had a special going. The BOGO sale. Not only did I get the safari, but also got a BH 505 pro package, as well as a pinpointer probe. For the money I spent, I am satisfied. Like Richard said: it's all about getting to know the machine. The more time you log on, the better you get !! I had sticker shock at first, and my first outings were less than pleasurable. If you have been used to another brand of machine, then it takes some getting used to, especially with all the different tones and such. But, once you know your machine it can bring you much joy !! I have found coins in areas that I detected with my other machine (xlt) which by the way is still an excellent machine. The depth is a great benefit from the Safari. It will definately find things in areas that were previously hunted, or considered "hunted out". I am still waiting for Andy's book to arrive. Andy has definately benefitted from the safari, as sales of his book must be on the rise. Dishing out a lot of money on a machine is something that should not be done in haste. I am glad that people are asking lots of questions. If you ask the same question to 10 different people, you may get 10 different answers. It is then up to you to find some common ground in all your Q&A's. Hope this helps  Ron

I too got the Kellyco special and felt rather stupid for a while after attempting to employ 20 year old experience on a new FSB machine. The tones continue to be code but I am finding things. Try to use it two or three times a week.

Dug in an old amusement park yesterday. Found a couple of newer dimes and what looked to be a Silver Dollar down deep. With my excitement building I looked at the shiny rim... Well it turned out to be a steel slug the same size... Should have known from the tone but I'm still learning the music.

Today I dropped by an old creekside park, went straight to the huge oaks that line the banks... Two quarters 1971, and 1988 and a rather decrepit clad penny. The I found one of those multiple tone targets that just seemed to consistent and steady. Dug a nine inch hole and found a mattel toy car at the bottom. I am surprised at it's condition, little corrosion, yet completed filled with dirt. Tones where steady at 38 and 39... Turns out it is one of those little cars with batteries and electric motor in it. Accounts for the readings, as it has to have a copper wound DC coil in there.

The Safari is a confounding machine that won't let you rush it. You'll get love if your consistent and thourough in learning its music.

I to have noticed the machine is more depth capable than others. I can't wait to try it on a beach...

Hi all. I have been detecting for over 20 years i the UK and in that time used about 30 detectors including
Minelabs, XP Goldmax Power & G Maxx2, XLT (6 years), Fishers, Laser/Tesoro. I always fancied the simplicity of
the Quattro but colleagues always told me to leave it alone and go for the Exploroer. I never did as I prefer to "turn on
and go".

I bought the Safari about 3 months ago.......WOW !!!! I can honestly say it's the best detector I have ever used. It's
finding stuff on hunted out fields and the recovery speed is very fast. I hunt in "coin & jewelery" mode and listen for
the low grumble sounds with steady number. Hammered coins tend to come up at 9 with foil showing on display.

Not only am I finding these thin silver coins less than half the size of a finger nail but minute .22 pellets. Also picking
up medieval nails like nobody's business which means that I would get Roman/Saxon Brooches if they are under the
coil.

I have used The Sovereign XS Pro but the Safari is more like a single frequency machine. The tones take a bit of
getting used too over other machines but if I can cope so can anyone!

I love the fact that Multi frequency machines ignore coke and hot rocks and the Safari excels here as well.

I can't compare the Safari against SE or E-Trac as I haven't used them. All I can say is that the E Trac must be an
awesome machine but so is the price!!!! I believe there is a lot of learning to get the best out of the them.

As far as I am understand the Safari has the same processor (but different software) and coil as the E-Trac but
isn't as versatile. I can see me sticking with the Safari for longer than I had my XLT. If you just want a machine that
does it all, is switch on and go, easy to learn, and does the business then you won't be disappointed.

Can I also recommend the new Garrett pinpointing probe. Pricey but the best I've seen and used.
