Copper coins discriminate where?

dlh

New member
Just curious.....SInce I havent found any yet, I was wondering where the older copper coins might discriminate out on the Vaquero?

Thanks
Denis

Seem that depth has alot to do with where exactly they disc out, but on mine most are around 4 o clock while other max out.The ones that max are always very bright red.

If I had any money last night when I read this thread I would have bet you couldn't disc out any copper coin. Lucky for me that I didn't start running my mouth before I checked my Tejon and low and behold I can even disc out a clad dime. Anyway the tejon disc out an IH penny at about the 3 o'clock position and the clad dime was just a tad higher maybe 3:30.

There must be a reason for this but right now I can't think of a good reason to be able to disc out a copper coin, zincs I can see why. Learned something, now I need to figure out how I can use that function to my advantage. I will start a new thread for this question, rather than taking this one in another direction.

I've coin hunted with the DeLeon, Cibola and Omega 8000 and I've never been able to disc out copper pennies with the discrimination set at max.

Lets see if I can say it differently..........I am not looking to discriminate it out. Since I really havent found any copper, I am not really sure where on the discriminatin knob copper falls.
Your point is correct....I dont want to miss old coins.
Thanks
Denis.

It will be up higher on the control Copper and dimes are very close if not identical on some coins.

Have you air tested SIR. ???? This is a pretty good way to find your discrmination points.. Most machines are a little different too..even though the same make and model.. But close.... Run a copper penny, a clad dime and a zinc cent.. Just above where the zinc cent hits will be your copper and dime range

Just to add to Elton's comments, if you don't have a old coin you can buy one at a coin dealer for a couple of bucks, that you can use for air testing. The last year for copper penny's was 1982. But you said older copper so I use an 1889 Indian head penny for my air testing and on the Tejon was on the edge of disc in and out at the 3:00 o'clock position.

Seems 777Timo said his Vaquero disc out the old copper at 4:00 o'clock, so if you was to run at about the 2:00 or 2:30 position or lower, you should be getting the older copper coins if you run over one with the coil.

Good luck,

Indian head pennies are bronze but some early ones have nickle. That said the standard indian will disc out somewhere in the zinc penny range. The early nickle indian will disc out much sooner.

I haven't done a serious check on all my detectors concerning this, but can say that modern copper pennies discriminate out fairly close to the highest setting, definitely higher than zinc pennies. Your best bet is to put one under the coil and turn up the disc on your machine and note the setting where it drops off.
