Copper Plate Photograph

Found this detecting my neighbors yard. I believe this is a copper plate (etched) photograph. It appears to be a thin sheet of copper with a lead-filled back. The corners are bent and/or folded, but unless part of it is missing it looks like the original shape was a triangle with a size of about 4" per side. Some of the lead back can be seen in the top folder-over corner. The lead back definitely gives the item some weight and rigidity. The picture etched on the copper side shows 4 people in the back (1 female) and 2 people in the foreground. Their clothing looks like early 1900's. Based on the stone building façade on the left side it looks like they are exiting a building (reminds me of mobsters/gangsters/mafia being escorted out of a courthouse!). So I was curious if anyone knows more about this style photography and / or specifically this image.
Thanks... Mike

Have a couple old family photos that are called tinplates but they don't have lead attached. Lead was used in typesetting, and that looks somewhat like a newspaper picture. You have a very interesting find there!

+1 on the newspaper printing plate. The photo was "screened", a process used by newspapers to produce shades of grey with black ink. Still an interesting find.

It looks like a photogravure item that is part of a copper sheet that ink was applied to and then pressed to paper. The tiny dots held the ink. Peace

I think this is correct because you can see the mesh for printing on a newspaper...

p.s.
It's amazing !!!

Very cool find Mike. I like these old photos. Agree with you that it looks like three well dressed mobsters with a moll. Not sure who the two guys in the foreground are. Attorneys? Kind of looks like one is bumming a light for his cigarette or perhaps they are just conspiring on how to get their clients off lol.

I was a photoengraver in a previous life. That sure looks like a newspaper print plate. They can be flat or curved. Nice find. Peace Roy
