Correction to oldest coin and key date and apology

I posted my oldest coin find and a key date v nickel of 1886.
I found this nickel on Sunday and did not post it until I
took it to the coin shop on Monday. During lunch I visited
the coin shop and he concurred that is was an 1886 and even
showed me in his book how much it would have been worth if
was in good shape. I talked to a friend about cleaning it and
he suggested using an sos pad and lightly rubbing it. It did
work but revealed that is was an 1896 and not an 1886. Here
is the new picture along with the original. I have never cleaned
a coin before but now on nickels at least I think the sos pad
will work at least to verify the date. Sorry for the error.
This is still my oldest coin find but not a key date.

Thanks Randy

No need for an apology, I just consider it an 'update.' Regarding the SOS pad, it seems like that would do a lot of scratching, although, none was apparent in your picture. Doesn't take anything away from a great find anyway!!

Randy, still a good find. Those v's, any date, just don't come along that often. As far as cleaning older nickels, Buffalo's and v, some times arm and hammer baking soda and a wet tooth brush scrubbing will remove enough of the crud to reveal a date. HH jim tn

Thanks guys for the comments and tips on cleaning. My dad always said that experience is the best teacher and that is what I like about this forum. I am not only gaining experience as I go along but there are lots of experienced folks here and you guys are always willing to help. Much appreciated, Randy

No apology needed! Sorry the date wasn't what it first looked like. When they get crusty, it is really hard to tell. I have not yet found a nickle that old, but some of the pennies around that age that have turned up have been difficult to read.
