I just got my Cortes and when in set up mode with all the test it ask you to do, the lcd just blinks at random, everything shows up on the lcd screen even up in the air it does this. The book is of no help thus far, any ideas? i am pretty new so forgive me being a TARD. LOL thanks all help will be appreciated. Ronnie

Ronnie,
I'm not sure I understand what "the lcd just blinks at random" means. Is the display turning off and on, or is it just displaying different messages up on the screen? If it is flashing different messages, ie. copper-cent-silver-pulltab-ring, and it is doing it at random, you might have some interference around the room, or you might have the sensetivity up too high. Try just turning the sens. so that it is just on. Make sure the coil isnt close to any object (feet away, rather than inches), and then see what the display does.
Hope this helps and gets you going the right direction.
J.

Navy? Squid? just wondering, anyway let me first by saying thank you. As the manual states i have all necessary controls in the right postition. Discriminate, threshold ground balance is at 12 o'clock, the other switches are in the middle. In other words everything is exactly by the book. I took your advise just now and just turned it to the on position and no more and i still get the same thing, nickle, tab, everything is blinking at random. No matter how far or how low the settings are and I mean all of them it does the same thing. The only thing i can change is the tone. Discriminate level will quit beeping at max, but the lcd is still blinking everyting. Except what its suppose to be. Every thing is very random. let me know? Thanks. Can you reboot these things? lol

I got a tip from Mr Gifford and he pointed out that, I may be getting interference with power sources. I was in the yard and it was not doing it as bad, but it was still doing it. Outside I was under some high voltage power lines (street light) and there was a transformer across the street. I was told that type of situation can cause interference. He told me to give it another try tomorrow and see how it goes away from all this interference. So, I will wait untin manyana and see what happens, any other ideas are still very welcome. The unit did find some items on the test run, I got audio signals and found some things in my yard with the LCD scrolling as it was. I hope it works out tomorrow.

If you are in the house, you will be picking up interference from many electro-magnetic sources, such as refridgerators / TV / underfloor wiring to name but a few. If you are checking out your detector in your yard, it could be that there is a lot of iron trash in your yard ... perhaps there might be a power line running under your yard? is there a cell phone transmitter near your house? or overhead / underground powerlines? try taking your detector out somewhere 'neutral' like a field out of town, or a local park. If it still goes nuts, bring it back to your dealer to check it out <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)"> HH charlie(UK)

house and yard, not as bad in yard but still get scrolling. Think its the power lines and transformer across the street?

Thank you all for all your help. I am going to find a neutral spot and hope this works out. Either way I will post to let you all know. Thank you all for your help. and if there is anything I can do for you let me know. I am pretty good at other things.

When my eldorado gets unstable I use it to find the source. Simply raise it in the air and pivot in a circle. When it gets most squirrely you have found the source of interferrance.

Ronnie I have the same problem with my Cortes in my house and in my backyard, overhead power lines, two burried power lines etc. makes my detector act like its a motor boat. Once I get away from the interference, it works great.

Yeah, I found a sweet spot in my bedroom, LOL Dont take that the wrong way. Anyway I took someones advise here and started going in circles and found the source to be near my dsl modem or it was my modem. Pointed away from it, It went to set up mode pointing right at it and it looked like a slot machine. Thanks, Ronnie
