Counterstamped Large cent, 2 cent piece

Evolution

New member
Got out for a short hunt today with my buddy. We hunted a field adjacent to a foundation site in the woods. Turned up two large coppers including a nice counterststamoed one. Can't make out the counterststamp so any help with the ID would be appreciated. Also recovered an 1869 2 cent piece.... pretty beat up though.

nice finds. looks like you have a sweet spot ...

Two cents are kind of rare to find. Hope you can get it cleaned up nice.

Excellent !

I think it is a Braided hair cent 1840-1852

I think you're right. Looks like a braided hair variety. I've done a little looking into what the counterstamp is and unfortunately its not entirely clear and I can't pinpoint it exactly. Thanks for the reply.

At a colonial site years ago I had found one simular to that one you have pictured with a hole in it..mine said brittany or something like that..mine was the size of a large cent but didnt have any other detail on it other than the name stamped in it ..I thought it may have been the name of someones horse or animal as it was at an old colonial inn but thats just my theory...
