Went to an old abandoned farm sight today...totaly overgrown but decide poke around the house for a bit amongst the cockleburr and other vines and weeds to no avail. Headed back on what was the road and found what looks like a U.S. army lapel insignia. On the back we saw a mark that read 00MAR. No idea how old...MaRCH OF 1900? Need help on that as well as the stone I found walking back. I was walking back with the detector at me side and got a hit. Any hit in a field is worth checking I thought. Kicked a stone out of the way, swept acoss and nothing...what the heck? Swept across the stone and got a signal. Brought it home and checked it with a magnet and it stuck. Went and Googled how to tell a Meteorite and it is passing the tests. Sorry for the poor picture quality. Comments are welcome !

It must be raining rocks. I was up in the hills last weekend and found a magnetic rock on a abandoned logging road. Mine will hang off my earth magnet( stronger than average) no problem. Mine does not have a black streak of any sorts but it has been sitting in the soil for a while. It was on a mountain side right off the road. I did break it just to check it out and it does crumble apart easier than most. Plus it has the small specks of silver which some say are nickle specks I guess. Called the local sience dept at wSu and they never called back. I just wonder what I would actually do with a meteorite. Sell it, keep it, give it away to museum?
Reminds me of the old 80s Creepshow movie. I done broke it so I can give some away.

I'm liking the button. Anything with the ol US on it is great in my book.
Nice finds

NICE on the button!

Now, the rock...

The pics are blurry, but it looks like there are holes in it. Holes=just a rock.

If it's just an illusion....and those aren't holes...the next thing you need to do is grind a little bit off and take a look. NO...if it's a meteorite, it won't decrease the value (remember, until it's identified, it's worth nothing).

If the ground(grinded) surface looks something like the photo(s) below...THEN you might have a meteorite.

PS BTW It's a slice of NWA 869. First photo shows the metal flecs. Second photo shows the rock structure.

Really like your button, but your rock appears to be either industrial slag ( usually very dimpled like your sample ) or else vesicular basalt which is very similar in appearance to that of industrial slag. . If it is a meteorite, because of its vesicular surface it most likely would be of lunar origin and very rare. The only way to know for sure is to send it in and have it analyzed by an expert.

Well after getting help here and some more research I do not think I have a meteorite. Hot rock of some sort I guess. I did discover a US collar insignia on Ebay that looked just like mine for $25. It said WWI WWII but I think mine is WWI because of the inscription on the back 00MAR.

Thanks for Looking and commenting guys.

Nice finds, i found a rock similar to that. I took at look at it at 100x magnification and seen really nice white crystals. Most likely was slag but still neat to find. The button is really nice. I don't think I will have luck finding one in Indy though, go figure.
