Custom mode won't retain changes

kirk01

New member
After about 3 weeks of use my new AT-Pro won't retain my customized settings in the CUSTOM mode.

Also the factory preset in custom and coin modes are all wrong.

When turned on the custom mode shows 75 to 99 notched out plus 60 to 65 regardless of how many times I change it or try to reset it to factory preset.

Yes, I have changed the batteries.

In the coin mode 60 to 75 is notched out.

I can change settings while the MD is on and run it correctly.

But as soon as I turn it off it reverts back to the bad settings.

My poor wife had the machine one day MD'g with me for about 2 hours and not getting one coin signal while I was digging clad one after another with a different machine.

Finally I went over to her to see what was wrong and saw 75 to 99 blank.

This was the day we discovered the problem.

Boy, she was not happy about the wasted 2 hours.

She's new to MD and had only used this machine about two times before that so she didn't know what to look for.

Anyone else having this problem?

I can work around the problem by resetting every time I turn it off, but that gets tiresome.

Back to the factory?

Oh boy, free gift.

Thanks John,

I will call Sue.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem.

I had to return my Pro for the falsing issue, they fixed it and sent it back to me. Everything works fine now, except the same problem you have (mine is reset back to the factory setting, wide open with no disc). I generally use custom Pro mode, Iron disc at 35, Iron Audio OFF until I decide to check a target. It is a minor nuisance to have to reset my machine every time I want to use it, but it's really not that bad. If I didn't have to ship it back internationally, I would get the custom mode problem fixed. However, the machine works great in every other aspect...I really love it! I do not want to waste three weeks or a month of my short 5 to 6 month detecting season on sending it back again. Maybe once the snow comes back I will send it for the repair.

I hope Garrett resolves your detectors issues...good luck!

My repaired AT PRO has the same settings in CUSTOM MODE as it does in the COINS MODE. That is iron is set to 35 and in both modes the pixels are removed between 50 and 60 in addition to the normal first pixel in the foil area. I have new batteries plus I have reset the unit numerous times but it is always the same results. I can activate the pixels between 50 and 60 but this is not how the machine should work. I also will need to remember to inform anyone that uses the machine that they must activate the two excluded pixels.

usually when that happens there is a bad capacitor. I agree on calling Garrett. It should be repaired under the warranty...

Here is the reply I received from Garrett. The manual is wrong in certain areas so says Garrett.

Good morning Jim,

What you are describing is normal, they had the wrong picture in the manual also the wrong information in the manual. There is so post to be two pixels notched out between 50 and 60. The reason being is because on all of our metal detectors that have a display, has pull-tabs notched out in coin mode. Also Custom mode will always look like Coin mode until you change the settings in Custom Mode.
So what you are describing is totally normal, it doesn

Thanks GreyGhost for the interesting info.

In my case the machine does not retain the custom settings I put in when I turn it off and back on again.

Also 75 to 99 notched out plus 60 to 65 in custom when you turn it on can't be right.

I will continue to reprogram the MD every time I turn it on until Nov. and I'm not using it often.

Then I may send it in for a fix unless they tell me this is all "normal".

"If you change your pixels in Custom mode it will keep that setting until you change the Custom setting again or until you do a factory reset."

Not so in my case.

The machine works as advertised other then this issue and the need to add a Gizmo which helped the balance.

I'm having the same problem. My new AT Pro has about 10 hours of us and the custom mode reverts to the same odd settings every time it is turned off. When turned back on, it has 60 and 75-99 notched out.. I have tried resetting including removing the batteries, reinstalling them and resetting, and it still develops the strange settings when turned off and back on. Immediately after resetting, it appears normal and displays the same settings as coin mode, but only until turned off. Otherwise it seems to work normally. I guess I will call Garrett in the next day or two.

Hi,:look: Mine done that once I think:shrug:...Take your batteries out then push and hold the power button for a few seconds after that push the other buttons one at a time...:)..Leave the batteries out for at least a 1/2 hour after doing the other procedures ....Then put them back in you should be good to go.....Or at least I was....Hope this works for you....JJ

Thanks for the suggestion. I did just as you described, but no luck. Guess I'll call Garrett tomorrow. I could live with the problem, but am concerned that it may be the beginning of a larger problem and the unit is brand new so I guess I'll check.

I started out using the custom mode with disc set at 35 and it retained those settings. But I do not remember what the default was on segments being notched out. I have since switched to Zero mode which seems to suit me better but whenever I go back to custom, the settings are still there.

Wow! How did you figure that one out?

I have not tried it yet, but I will the next time I change batteries.

Glad it worked for you and I hope it works for me.

I hate sending things back.

I just figured it would discharge the memory capacitor....But I guess it's not working for most people....JJ

in the custom mode.....and each one would show different iron disc setting's in custom mode after turning it off and back on.......Heck one would always default to notching out all coins in custom mode on power up....

it's a common problem .....I have talked to a few people about it even a distributor has a personal one that does it....They work for awhile then the memory goes...I'll bet they will all do it eventually if you run them enough....

It's no big deal but it makes you wonder what happens ....it runs fine just weird in away......Probably a glitch....

I talked to Garrett and they act like they don't know what it is...Probably scared to admit another problem....can you imagine having to work on a bunch of them...The coil issue was bad enough....

I never told anyone about it on the forum's....But I lost all confidence in them and moved on...and its not the only problem but I will let ya'll figure out the other one....It's still got to do with the coil ....

Wow, this is sad, wonder what else will crop up over the next six months or so.

Maybe Garrett will give as all a credit on AT-Pro Model # 2!

I'll bet you you will win that bet!

I have one of the early mode SN # 504 series and the custom mode has not changed or lost any settings since I set them last December.
