CW Field yeilds finds

WestTn

Member
Found these last weekend in an area with CW cavalry and artillery action. I need help identifying what this small shield came from, the back side appears to be lead. Also found several of these lead capped nails that I have never encountered. Help with any of these items would be greatly appreciated.

The shield: If it's brass on the face and lead on the back, it's probably a printer's block without the wood block.

407floyd,
Just wondering how a printer's block would be in the middle of a battlefield, unless it was something the Cavalry or Artillery were carrying with them.
Thanks for the reply.

I,ve wondered the same thing. Other detectorist have found these at military sites too, so maybe they used them to stamp letters, notes, shipping containers, etc.
