CZ 3D or ID Edge?

Hi, it sounds to me like the ID Edge is the better machine? But on the 3D I like the idea of older coins giving a high tone when in enhance mode.

So on the Edge in the old coin mode will the tone on old coins be high or mid? If mid, then I guess that this mode in the Edge is simply notch discrimination and the 3D would be more suited for older coins?

Yet I still feel the Edge, well still has the edge! I like the instant jewelry mode for checking under park swings and such. Plus the Edge kind of looks like my GB2, which I like very much, because it does as advertised.

Yet if the 3D really does locate the older coins better, then I need one. Any thoughts on this? Thanks CC.
 
Honestly it's too soon to tell on the Edge. Reports are just starting to trickle in. One thing for sure is the "D" is an awesome machine. I think they are different enough to merit having both. One digital the other analog. I'm guessing the Edge might be better in iron same as the C$.
 
what machine you use, you won't fing them. I also believe that most any machine will find old coins, but if you get a CZ3d and only dig hi tones, like its suggested, you will miss a lot of coins.

The CZ3d is a great machine for older sites, but if you hunt modern or post 1950 sites, be prepared to dig junk. I dug more junk with my CZ3d then I have ever dug with any machine that I have ever owned. Now, if your looking for a machine that will be versatile enough to hunt both modern & older sites and still have the ability to descriminate out a lot of the newer junk targets, I would opt for the ID Edge.

But if your primary hunting is at older sites then the CZ3d will serve you well.
 
I don't want to steer you away from one, because they are both great units. But, like Mike said, the 3D is a specialized unit designed for 50's & older coin hunts. The Edge is more of an all-around versatile unit that will do equally well in modern & old sites. HH, Bill
 
Thanks all for your help. I'm guessing then that the ID Edge will give a medium tone say on older nickels or coins on edge, while in the Old Coins Mode? That would mean when searching for older coins in that mode, one would dig all medium and high tones?

I think I am going to purchase an Edge today. It reminds me of a souped-up Gold Bug 2, but for general hunting. I am starting to like Fisher Detectors more and more. I just wish Fisher offered more accessories, like smaller and DD coils. And how about a digital Gold Bug 3, simple- more like the GB2 and Edge and not the GStrike.

Back to the Edge- My thinking is because the Edge is small yet high performance, I could stow it in my rig. Then as my busy schedule allows I could detect sites of opportunity, to fill in the voids between my water/beach hunting vacations. I like the idea of perhaps seeing a park swing and checking it out quickly in the jewelry mode- even if I only have 20 min. So I think then that the Edge fits the bill better for me. My only concern is the single and low frequency as I know how sensitive my GB2 is on thin gold rings! But then again I guess that works both ways, perhaps deeper on certain items?

If you are hunting a site with old coins, in our soil, then you better dig everything above iron. I dug a 1898 "V" Nickel at 7" that read as 136 on a Sovereign with the Sun Ray meter, which is the foil range. Now same "V" Nickel read as Foil on a CZ 6a. Now if you are just digging high tones, you would have missed this one. This nickel had been in the ground a long time. At another site, I dug a 1897 "V" nickel that came in high tone, it had been moved around by some dirt work a couple of week's before I found it with my CZ 3D.At another site, a Barber dime read as Zink in and out of the ground on a CZ 6a,CZ5, and a Whites Classic ID. So what ever unit you use, you need to know that unit or you will leave some good stuff in the ground. Yes we dig a lot of trash but only to come back a later date and find a coin that was hid by trash. Just my 2 zinks. HH.. BJ
 
Get them older nickels around iron and they can be way down in the foil range. The last two V's I got with the Advantage disced out when I turned the disc up to 12:00, normally nickels don't disappear until about 2-3:00. Haven't used a 3D (yet) but there is alot to be said for the way its set up to get the older stuff. You have to have the right kind of sites to make use of it. I don't get people that can't read what the machine is intended for and then pan it cuz it don't work out for them. :shrug:

I don't have a Edge (yet), but do have, and love the C$. I also have a 3D which I also like a lot... For me, they are a great combo and seem to compliment each other well. If I were buying right now, I'd have to get the Edge though... I just like the high resolution of the ID numbers as well as the reported depth and target separation...

Mark, I just ordered an Edge today. Good price from the big K---- CO! Well, I think? I own many detectors- too many! If I find one I like, I keep it and sell the others. For me a detector has got to feel right. I know in a short time if we get along!

I've got a good feeling about the Edge and think I was swayed by the field test of the Edge, at the Fisher Site. Simple, light, power and fast. Seems to find the goodies? We shall see. In the barn I now have a GB2, 1280X, CZ20 and soon the Edge. I have tried in the past a 1266XB and Gold Strike, which I should have kept. I kind of liked it, but wanted a bigger coil. I may get another?

When I get the Edge and use it a bit, I'll make some reports here- I'm sure it will be after Christmas though- Thanks again for all your help. CC
 
A friend of mine with his 3D dug 2 war nickels at 2 sites,one was a P and the other was a D. They did not read the same on his 3D and on my CZ 70. These bounced on both units. Sq tab to nickel and beaver tail to nickel. One nickel had some kind of black dirt on it. Indian head's will read different. I have hunted several of times with a guy that use's a old 1265 x, I have seen him make some real good finds. Look at the stuff that Steve in So AZ finds with his 1266 xb.Beep and dig, no meter to look at. Its what ever works for you..HH.. BJ
 
I have the 3D C$ and Excel,I will get the Edge in the spring,as far as the 3D goes,I have dug a gallon jar full of nic and all read nic and high tone one one read in the pull tab and it was a V,out of the gound it read high.Yes you will dig trash with any unit you have some dig less with the C$ then I,I just know my 3D better then the C$ and love my 3D. From what I have read the Edge will be the way to go, I think the C$ sells will fall and then it will only be "I owned a C$ once its a damn good unit" as they are swinging some newer Fisher. Times change and so do detectors. I still have my very fist detector, over 30 years ago.
 
just my thoughts on any and all detectors, learn your machine and dig ALL till you know what it's telling you till then you wont know if its junk or gold. thank
