Got it today. Took it out, found a nail. I dont know it if it is because of the wet georiga clay here or what, but i couldn't "dial" it in. The signals were here, there, then everywhere. Has anyone got one of these, and can help me with tuning it. I like it alot, but it seems to be kinda vague with stuff being in the ground. I re buried the nail, and it was like it couldnt find it anymore. Wierd. My wife got here Ace 250 today also. We have yet to break it out though. Thanks guys/gals.

Hey Jetman,

Gosh, by all means break that Little Yeller Feller outa da box!

It is just turn on and go, anf fun to use...

I'm presently having a battle with my newly acquired CZ... your description fits my experience precisely!
Reason? It is a very powerful and sensitive machine.

Take your book of instruction out into the yard with you and follow the ground balance instructions exactly,
until you get very familiar with them.

You could try keeping your sensitivity low, at 2, for a while, til you get things dialed in.
and for surface hunting, at this point, it won't hurt to sweep from 6" off the deck!

Plenty of power in that machine!

Hi guys:

I have owned a CZ-3d for a few years. You will find that it is very sensitive and talks a lot, and has a real attraction to rusty iron. To set it up correctly you have to be sure to not be close to any iron above or below the ground. You need to be aware of electrical interference also from many difference sources, IE power lines, radio interference, and other detectors. Be sure to keep your sensitivity down low, mine falses when the sensitivity is above 4. I found myself getting discouraged digging up all the nails and rusty iron after getting a nice high tone. It is better to be aware of its infinity to rusty iron and not get your hopes up on a high tone expecting silver or gold only to be disappointed when you dig up rust. I will get disgusted from time to time and put mine down for a while but always take it out after using another detector to see if I missed anything. Some people swear by them, lately I refer to mine as my obama, its talks a good game but hasn't shown me any real substance yet.

humph....we went out this morning, the wife and i, and walked around a bit. i did turn down the sens. a bit and was getting hits that the little yellow guy did not. it did pick up an old beer can 1 and a half feet into the ground, that was impressive. she kept finding stuff all over the place. the beer cans gave off a high/mid tone even with the disc. all the way up. wierd? it says in the manual that coins will get a repeating tone as opposed to a one-way tone. i have yet to figure out what that means. cause it beeps, and finds pull tabs and old beer cans. the Ace 250 picks up stuff quicker than mine, but i dont think that i have completely dialed it in. hers goes off on random stuff though. mine is definatly deeper than hers. the coil that came on it said something on it, like bounty hunter or something, which is odd.

Try using the CZ in the Salt mode for a couple of hours.Keep the volume knob low 3 at the most this will help you determine the size of the target. You have a learning curve to over come as beginner in metal detecting and using a new machine.Stay with one unit until you learn the basics or you will be more confused. The CZ has a much slower sweep speed than the Ace as an example.Read everything you can about CZs and keep going over the manual and field experience you'll have to be patient.

I am going to learn mine, i am bent on it. I like it though, it picks up really deep stuff. I just need to figure out what a coin sounds like, then im in!

Hi once you here a good sound in ALL DIRECTIONS check the meter to to see if it hits on the high side if so raise your coil over the target a few inches and sweep slow If the sound goes away DID IT coins will hit on any direction you turn the coil. If you get a good hit in all directions and raise the coil and still here it a big can or large item is below coil. For deep nails you will get a good sound one way and a chopped off or iron sound the other way. To check if it is a nail do it in pinpoint mode one side will sound short like a coin but when you turn 90 degrees you will get a longer sound. practice with a nail and a coin . You will get it down quick what not to dig. I have never had a coin that did not give a sweet sound from every direction yet. Keep your dis. low and you will here the different sounds that junk make compared to coins, check out every high tone make very small SLOW sweeps over it and try to get it to hit every direction. Pull tabs and other modern trash sounds different when that happens check the meter as you swing, it will bounce all over but may still sound like a good target thats your clue to tell you that i am not a coin but sound like one. GOOD LUCK HARRY

The high tone for coins with direction locks all four directions and use your ID meter. The CZs can be fooled by nails but at most sites and with more experience this will be a minimum problem.Keep a simple coin and trash log and make short notes of your hunt sites.I like to keep trash after a hunt to use as test targets for a later reference.Enjoy the hobby

It may help you to make a test garden, bury a few things and mark where they are with something like a golf tee. Then you can check out how they sound when you swing the coil over them.

Oh boy am I having fun with my CZ-6-10:unsure:

Trying to pinpoint (surface/shallow) targets is a bit difficult... so I raised the coil up some, and made a few passes...

and raised it more....

and raised the coil up to 16 - 18" so I can get a small, yet positive beep over the target!

I think this machine has a bit more power than I'm accustomed to.
A small coil might be far superior for trashy park hunting...

I just don't want to dig deeper targets at the park, with an audience of onlookers in uniforms swinging large wooden clubs.
After an hour or so it got heavy and I switched to my Tesoro and spent another couple of hours since it seemed lite as a feather.

Nice WX here... 70+ after the fog burns off.

I have been metal detecting 35 yrs. mostly with Garrett and White's. I purchased a CZ-3D in Jan of 07 and have had very good luck with it. You need to purchase the video Metal Detecting Real World Techniques by Thomas Dankowski. It is very informative and should shorten your learning curve.

sensitivity 5 or below will get you great depth and iron should not be too big of a problem. Sweep the CZ's too fast and you will get lots of high tone falses from the iron. Turn the disc to 0 so you can hear the low iron tone, that will also help you recognize the proper sweep speed to use in trash. It cannot be overstated...slow is the way to go to let the machine work at optimum and allow you to properly seperate each audio response from the previous and eliminate the iron falsing to high coin.

Unless they changed the labeling the coil should say Quicksilver on it.

I was curious about that....

Just got 10 1/2 coil that says Quicksilver, and except for the label, is physically same as the one on my 1280-X was,
but I guess the internals are different?

That sucker is big and will sound off on too many targets in trash. I would suggest only use that on the beach. That's the only place I used it, and that's the only place I use my Sunray 12 inch. For parks and trashy places, I use either the stock 8 inch or better yet, the little 5 inch coil on my 6a. With the 5 inch, I can crank up the sensitivity more and it does go deep and pin points right on. Plus, I don't have to hip mount the control box with the little coils since the machine is balanced really well with it and seems pretty light.

I hate to say it...but it may be a good investment to get one of those too !! HA !

Just a few things that have helped me with my learning curve, and it is a big curve. Always keep the Disc. on Zero. that way you can hear when there is Iron or something else in the hole. I also listen for the sound of Iron and the sound of coin in the same place. If they are together do a 90 degree cross and the coin sound will go away. I have learned to dig only the coin sound by itself without any co-sound. I hope to get good enough to tell if it is a coin and pull tab or iron or whatever is in with the coin, but I'm not that good yet. The way I operate at this time, I dig only highs that are by themselves.

I set up by adjusting the G.B. as accurate as I can and set Dis.on Zero, Sen 2 and sometimes up to 3, sound on 3. Yesterday I was out in my yard and found a penny standing up at 8". I'll tell you these things have some power. All you need is a 5" coil in the park with John Law watching. In good dirt they will go 8"-10".

Just hang in there and you will catch on. But you won't learn all there is to know.

Right, it is a quicksilver coil. I will slow my sweep speed down. My sens. is 2-3 with it set on five in the disc (coins only) I did not know that you have to turn it and see if it hits. I will try to get out and use it some more before the weekend is out. With the nail, it hit high, then went into the default sound. but seemed confused on what to call it. Im trying guys! The wife loves hers, it beeps, she digs, she is happy!

Thanks Rover!
Yep, gonna look for an 8" or 5" soon!
LOL Too much of a battle at the park.:)

Im really not in a trashy area. I just have to learn what beeps are the good ones. When i check a beep, i do a cross. Idont understand what turning it 90 degrees means.Turn the whole coil so that it is pointing across the ground?
