CZ's and Georgia Clay???

I am looking to purchase a CZ-3d will it work well in the Georgia Red clay or am i going to have problems. with the soil.thanks joe

From what I understand Ga. clay is difficult to work with. Being from Pa. don't have a clue, but feel a CZ will do as well as any and probably get beter depth than most..Perhaps some Ga. CZ hunter can offer some expertise..

I was in Danville, Virginia with Mike-Virginia Beach in March. I used a 3D and a CZ-70. The CZ-3D did not fair well in the iron laden heavy clay. However, the CZ-70 did do OK. It was very hard to ground balance and it was constantly cracking and popping no matter what the sensitivity but it did find some coins. Hope this helps...HH

Here in iron-laden MI, I always hunt in the SALT mode. Granted, it does knock the Sensitivity down a hair, but, it really helps with GB'ing and iron falsing. You might want to give that a try.

My cz70 does better than any other detector I've had. Ground balancing can be tough, but depth is good. I've pulled coins at least 8 inches here.
I will give the SALT mode a try though...never though of that.

Although I never experimented with salt mode many have and some actually compare signals in both modes to further determine to dig or not. I have heard ground balancing slightly negative helps in really bad conditions. Unfortunately CZ's work better in some states than others but usually are up to par with other manufacturers. Expermintation has made many a good detectorist just a bit better.

I lived in Raleigh, Nc for a while and used my CZ-7 there. We had the same lousy red clay as in Georgia. Allen from Mi is correct, the salt mode will help, I used it there when I hunted, it did seem to help. You will definitely have to manually ground balance the machine for decent results though. I say decent, for the machine does have a tendency to false more in that red dirt than anywhere else I've ever hunted with it. If I were to go back there to hunt, I would probably prefer a machine with self-adjusting ground balance (Whites Dfx) or a true multi-frequency (like Minelab sovereign), CZ would not be my first choice in red clay, unfortunately.
Hope this helps

a TH'ing acquaintence showed me a park in a nearby town. It was an artificial island in a mill stream. All the dirt was fill dirt, from Main Street. Of course, it was dug up 100 years ago, so it's hundred-year-old fill, with 150 y.o. coins in it. Talk about iron-infested! When I first started, I was getting about 5 - 10 iron hits per swing. After a little while, I flipped over to SALT mode and re-did my GB. I noticed a marked improvement with the Iron, as I got maybe 3 - 4 iron hits per swing there. That's still a lot of junk in the ground, but it did make hunting a little easier.
I usually GB a little on the negative side, to help with the mineralization here.

So what exactly is GB "negative"? <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?">

When you lower your coil to the ground, during the ground balance process, one of three things happens.
1. The threshold sound you are using for balancing goes silent. (negative balance)
2. The threshold sound you are using for balancing gets louder. (positive balance)
3. The threshold sound you are using for balancing stays the same. (proper balance)
When balancing for a negative balance, you want the threshold to get quieter when bobbing the coil toward the ground. Be careful of going too negative, or positive, as you will loose depth.
Hope this helps.

I've only been there twice. Only old coin to come up was a '30 Wheat. Thought I had an IH, it was so crusty-corroded.

I moved here from Buffalo, NY where Fishers and White's go deep.
Came here to GA, what a bummer almost gave up detecting. This red clay stuff is terrible. The White's MXT would go no deeper (on a penny) than 4" it was noisey and loved hot rocks, Garrett Gti1500 the same, rarely ID'd correctly. Tesoro Cibola, Euro Sabre max 3", Minelab Avantage 6-7", and a bunch of others that were just terrible depthwise couldn't get deeper than 1".

So they all were sold, bought an older Minelab Musketeer X, this thing is a beauty for depth, loud and clear penny at 7", small 1/8" silver heart charm at 5". It's a keeper of a detector.

Now here's the twist.
I had an old Fisher 555 d/b (body mount) VLF/TR control box, which needed a new tuning pot and toggle switch that I replaced. Finally got a 8" & 12"coil and handle assembly. Fisher was "very" helpful with the 8" coil, excellent service.Last night I was able to get out and test the 555 using the 8" in this red crap soil. What a suprise!!! Ground balances beautifully in all metalwith no falsing, has no problem finding a penny at 8" in all metal or TR discriminate. In TR disc, no falsing or cracking like with many other newer auto disc. ground balance units. For a 20 year old detector, this detector ROCKS. It was a real joy to use. Like all Fishers, it likes finding coins on edge.

there must be something in georgia clay thats not in nc clay,i have not had any problem with my new cz3d or my cz6a with clay.i detect zinc or copper at 8 inches or more in clay.in fact where my house is is clay and hit on a 1942 penny at 9 inches on my cz3d with no problems.:D
