For some reason we always end up having crazy things happen while we're detecting. Two years ago we saved a young raccoon trapped in a garbage can. Last year I walked up on a 6' snake that looked ready to strike and didn't stick around to ask any questions. Also last year I stumbled across a deer locked in a shed. Yes, in a LOCKED shed. See this post for the video:

Today we went to an area that earlier in the week I discovered an old picture of that showed that the area had looked much different back in 1965 and that gave us a reason to go and detect it. We parked in a gravel area at the top of a hill and started walking down an old closed down road that was pretty much at a 40 degree angle. Within 5 minutes the first coin that I pulled up was a 1935 wheat. I thought we were in for a good day. A few minutes later another penny but not a wheat. Mom yells over that there is a snake a few feet away from her. Neither one of us are very fond of snakes so we stayed a little closer to the edges of the road at least in that area until we got past the area where she saw the snake.
As we made our way along this old road I got ahead of her and down to a level area and I ran across a good 42 signal. I dug the 42 signal and pulled up a quarter. I'm rubbing the quarter to see what year it is and all of the sudden I could hear someone running and it started to sound like a few people. I thought maybe there was some kind of cross country race in that area today. I didn't bother looking up until the sound started getting so close and so loud that I thought these people were going to run me over. As soon as I turned my head I was shocked to see a horses hoof about 10" from me. I rolled out of the way and stood up to yell at the rider for coming so close to me and realized that there was a second horse right behind the first and no rider on either horse. I was standing there trying to sort out what the heck I just saw.
My Mom came down and said "did you hear me yelling head's up!". I said no but I thought that maybe people had parked up by where we did and their horses got away from them. She suggested that maybe people got thrown off their horses. That seemed a little too improbable to me and went back to detecting. About 5 minutes later a thin girl about about 20 years old was walking towards me and I noticed that she had a riding helmet on. I thought "this can't be good". I noticed the shoulder of her black shirt had white dust all over it, her arm was dirty and she looked very scared. I said "what happened?". She said that a dirt bike making a lot of noise went past her and her friend and their horses threw them off. I asked if she was ok and she said she thought she had a broken wrist. I told her that I nearly go trampled by the horses but she appeared to have more on her mind than worrying about if I was ok. She started walking in the wrong direction and I told her that they went the other way. She limped along at a moderate pace never to be seen again. When we left that area we rode around and kept our eyes open for the two girls or their horses but never saw them. I was parked too far away and there was a big tree limb about 6' above the road and my vehicle would not have made it underneath of it or I would have offered to drive the girl around to find the horse. Not sure what condition her friend was in but she didn't seem too concerned other than finding the horses.
It's kind of hard to get the full effect by this picture but you can see off to the right near the grass where I have it chopped up with my predator shovel. About 10" to the left near the top of where I started digging you can see the mark that the horses right hoof made. Kind of an indent with a little sliding mark behind it. My head was right in that area where the ground is all chopped up so you can imagine how close the horse was to me.
What a crazy day! I only found 4 coins in that area and the 35 wheat was the oldest.
