DD coil or a x-1probe

zonet182

New member
Im new to metal detecting and I was wondering if someone could help me choose which one is better for finding deeper target: the 14 inch DD coil or x-1 probe?

Thanks!

mike

But no problem. Lets start off with getting things straightened out first. The 14" DD Coil will go Deep in area's that have moderate Trash but it will have problems when you get into area's that have tons of Trash or Iron. Getting between each item is the tough part with a big coil of this caliber. If you don't run this size coil in Iron Mask -16 and go Ferrous Tones in Trashy area's, I know that this coil will have too many items under it and the good targets will get masked and the detector won't see them due to all the targets under the coil. I use the Stock 10.5" Coil and find coins 10"+ without much of a problem. The X-1 Probe is an in- line Probe made by SunRay that can be mounted to the Explorer. This Accessory is for use when you open up a hole and need a Probe that will tell you exactly where the item is located and about how far it is away from the Probe by how loud it sounds off on the item. The Probe gets about 3" on a Coin sized object. So if you want Deep, just stick with the Stock Coil and you will do just fine with it. Bigger Coils don't mean that you are going to get a Huge Increase On Depth, maybe an Inch or Two but that just depends on your settings and your ground conditions. Hope this helps you out a bit and Good Luck and HH and welcome to the Minelab Forum.

that the X-1 probe is the finest accessory you will ever get, imho. It saves you a ton of energy, and it will be an asset no matter which coil you use. I personally have the Sunray 5 inch, the WOT, Platypus, the Joey, Minelab 8 inch, and the stock coil. Each coil has it's place and time.

Experience will show you when and where to use each, BUT, the X-1 probe will work with each of them, to your advantage. Without question, I would advise to get the X-1 probe first, and add coils as you can.

Hi Zonet 182
Go with the X-1. If I had to do it again it would have been my first addition, my finds went way up as well as the speed. It takes away the question of what and where things are in the recovery.
Happy digging, mpk

Get the SunRay X-1 Probe first. Trust us on this! You already have the means to go Deep for Coins and such with the Stock Coil, so get the Probe and you will thank us later on. It is the 2nd most important part of the detector while the detector is the 1st part of course. It increases your recovery speed with those Deep targets that sometimes would otherwise take Minutes to find and it always wouldn't be something you were hoping it to be. That is what is so great about the Probe. You can find the target in the hole or in the plug and know if it is indeed a Conductive Item or Iron. So go ahead and buy yourself the SunRay X-1 Probe, you will be glad you did and you will be able to make more finds on your time out. Good Luck and HH.

In fact you may never use a coil that big. You would need an incredibly clean patch of ground, or beach area which you are not going to see to often (clean ground that is) to even use a coil much larger than 12 inches. First off, the x-1 probe is a must especiallllllly if you are new to this, it will be a night and day difference for helping you. A very close second will be a smaller, that's right, smaller coil than came with your machine. An 8 inch sun ray stealth coil or similar 8 inch coil will help you to separate targets easier; so the sounds won't be so bloody confusing. Hearing four different tones at once is a little ominous even for the very experienced explorer users and that's what frequently happens with large coils. The larger the coil, the better the chance of having more than one target under it at the same time and you having to learn how to separate them in the beginning is very difficult. A smaller coil will help you learn a great deal faster and give you awesome finds now, while you are still learning your machine. The sun ray eight inch stealth coil is lighter than the 10 and 1/2 inch factory coil and gets nearly the same depth, that's pretty much my all around coil and the first one I use on a new site and after that then I'll hit it again with the 10 and 1/2 inch, but I have not yet found anything better with the larger coil in that situation, which convinces me the eight inch isn't really missing much. Happy hunting to you and congrats on your new addiction.:detecting:
