DD Pin-pointing advice needed. :detecting:

I'm certainly not new to 'Tectin but I am new to DD coils & hear there a little different/difficult to pin-point with compared to a concentric. I got a D2 & a 6X10 on the way with my MXT Pro. I've never swung a DD. Any suggestions/advice on pinpointing with these coils?? :pulltab:

Put a coin on the ground and pinpoint it. Should be right in the middle. Some people like to drag the coil back until the signal is gone and it should then be right at the front of the coil. Try both ways and see which one you prefer.

Centering left to right and then pulling the coil back towards you works but the coin will be further from the front edge towards the center the deeper it is. Sometimes on deeper targets, I'll sweep left to right and then center the target then turn 90

I've had several DD's and the exact pinpoint spot can vary some from coil to coil. As Larry said, pinpoint some targets lying on the ground first (by whichever technique you prefer) and confirm exactly where THAT coil pinpoints. One 6x10 I had pinpointed exactly on center. When I had to replace it after being stolen the new 6x10 pinpointed about 1"+ further forward.

Hey Pirate, I swing a DD...really shallow or surface coins, I hold the coil high off the ground to narrow down the location...then I push the pinpoint button and lower the coil, zooming right in. Deeper coins are easier to pinpoint, those I stab with a probe and seem to be really tight like within and inch or so, to where the sound is the loudest, coins on a slant and tight spills again, I raise the coil up to where the signals start to separate. If you get that dime or quarter or nickle signal and cant stab a coin, it could be a silver or gold ring...I dang near gave up on a nice one this year that popped off like a nickle. If you stab too hard, you could turn a coin on its side, you will get the feel of coin over gravel after some practice. HH

( Tip for Newbies) A good alternative to raising the coil up is to pull the trigger a couple of times to activate the ratchet pinpoint mode in most of the White's detectors.

[size=large]as larry and srf2112 have said, practice with coins on top first. ya get two things that way. 1 ) ya find how your machine reacts to surface finds and 2) where the sweet spot is for pp. i really enjoy my D2. trying to enjoy my 8x6 sef but seems the D2 is my fav. don't over-think the dd. you been at it long time so it won't be hard for you to catch on and it becomes second nature. my biggest surprise was how well it seperates. i came upon a split signal. that is i swung the coil and it blipped over each target which were about 1" apart. it was quick and no scratchy or crackly. both signals were nice and distinct. it turned out to be two quarters about 2" down.it was a cool experience. have done it again a few times but targets came up trash. it's a great coil.

Thanks guys!! I just like to have my ducks in a row as much as possible before I hit the field. Y'all certainly helped me decide on which coils to get & I really appreciate that! By the way, apon all my reading and studying lately, I've come to the conclusion that it may be best to stick with White's coils over those Bulgarian ones. I've heard the workmanship on those coils is inferior to what White's produces and I know for a FACT that White's stands behind there products. Do I trust a foreign manufacturer like that? Uh... NO! COULD I be missing an extra inch or so? Maybe! But the headaches avoided if I ever had a problem would be worth that tiny loss. (I MAY try one of those 8x6's one day though!)
