I decided that with all my detectors and different coils I needed to plant a little test garden. So I searched my yard and found 3 places clear of iron and planted 3 dimes-6", 8" and 10". I was using my etrac with the 8" Sunray coil (only one I tried so far). I got a good signal on 6" but no signal on 8". To make a long story short-I was running deep on. When I changed to Deep off-a perfect signal at 8". Fast on or off made no difference. So........I thought deep on was suppose to enhance the deeper ones-but not at this particular location. Any thoughts or ideas?

folks have probably tweaked the E Trac just about to perfection anyway. I keep wondering if just running in the default coin mode just might be absolutely the best way to go by far. It is a very very deep hunting instrument just like it is. About the only thing you need to change is how you hunt! Going slow is the way to go and when you think you are going slow enough go a little slower! There are good targets there and this machine will seek them out with your undivided attention to the process.

I found it made no difference in my finds. My experience with deep on is that it lengthens and smooths out the quieter signals so they are easier to hear and pay attention to. I can't speak to the Sun Ray coil, as I am only using the Pro coil.
it seems like I get a better "hit" if I sweep a little faster than what I call slow. I can even slow down to about an inch a second and it stops responding altogether. I can speed up just a little and the target will come in weak, and if I speed up a little more it seems to sound smoother and louder. I am beginning to wonder.....
I tried this in my little test garden on a deep clad dime. I swung the coil with "deep on" and got an intermittent good signal. Then I switched to "deep off" and seemed to get a more repeatable signal. But then I realized there is a sweet spot under my coil where the deep dime gave me the same repeatable signal in "deep on" and "deep off." By the same token, if the coin was not under that spot, I got the same intermittent good signal with "deep on" and "deep off." The important point is I got a good signal no matter where the coin was under the coil. But for some reason I got a consistent repeatable signal every time the marker (of the coins location) was under the number below the Minelab logo on the coil.
