Deepest I ever dug that was non ferrous (small coin) had to be a 1834 Half Dime at about 11". The ground was very moist also. That is excellent depth for such a small coin in my book using a stock 10.5" ML coil.
But, if you relic hunting that's a whole different ball game as objects are many times larger then coins and hence can be detected at much deeper depths.
Your four inch iron ring at 20" sounds about right. Keep in mind coil size matter as well for an example a WOT coil will detected objects much deeper then say an Excellerator 6".
