Deep Stuff- Late 1800s Site

Coydog

New member
Got a Safari a few months ago. I feel real confident finding coins with it in parks etc. I have been searching an old site with lots of iron deep. Im loking for old coins. Does anyone have any suggestions on settings for my machine? Old items are all showing up at the deepest level of detection. Cant seem to lock on to any one reading ever. Ive been there 2x and have only recovered lead bullets and one belt buckle. The site was used heavily for years for parties, picnics, fireworks etc well before 1900. Lots of organic material above the loam.
Thanks

Coydog...Going REALLY slow may help if you are not already doing so. It may take many many trips to work the whole area, don't be in a hurry to go over the entire space. Patience is a virtue in this hobby for sure. You might also try the 6x8 sef coil. This will allow you to separate out the close items a little better. If you get a high tick hit, you may have to dig some iron out of the way to get to the item that gave you the non-ferrous item. Iron masking does hide a lot of great finds. No machine will see through it as some may claim!
Hopefully Prep, Croaker or Ken and others will chime in. They have more experience then me in older sites like the one you described.
Sounds like you have a great place to hunt. Looking forward to seeing some of your finds.

Thank You Bunker,
I will slow it down even more. If I get 2 or 3 hits at #37 then it changes to 40 then 6 then -1 then 10 what the heck? Sometimes I'll get a 15 or a 27...then when i clear off the top 2" of pine needles the signal changes completely. I am doing my noise cancelling and my coil is clean...
The top 4" have just enough .22 shells and even .25 cal shells to confuse things. those partially rusted brass shells are really squirrelly in their signal, and because they are so small they show up as deeper than they really are. Anyone ever see a .25 rim fire??? not me and I thought Ive shot everything. I know there is goodies there!!! just wish there was some more certainty in the readings because cutting through 10" of roots is a real time consuming process. I have been looking mostly in "relic" at about 18 sensitivity.(auto shows almost nothing!) I see alot of targets but Iron. Should I be more concerned with the highest pitch sounds or go more by the numbers? I wont give up! I have pictures of the site with thousands of people there and its only about 100yds by 100yds in size.

Definitely a trashy site! I hunt by ear. If I get a nice tone I will then look at my screen. If I like the sound, I dig it!!! Tend to dig a lot of trash sometimes.
I would try a smaller coil there.
Best of luck,
Bunker

In relic mode at sites such as this I set my machine at 14 or 15 sensitivity and as far as descimination only keep 6-39 open. You will miss some neat targets but I would start at these settings on my first few hunts at this location to try to "cherry pick" it

Thanks. Went to same site yesterday and found 4 indian heads going slow on sens 16. My first ih! The up-side of the pennys are coated with dirt. I dont want to scratch the penny trying to get it off. The "show side" of each penny looks a little green but the quality of the coin is really nice. They look brand new just a bit green. Most pennies I dig are in rough shape, pitted ,oxidized etc.. Years are from 1893 to 1903.

Coy- Those IHs often have that green patina and I don't clean them until I get home. For recoveries here in Central Jersey, they tid at 32-33-occasionally up to 34.
When you mentioned earlier that tid was jumping all over the range,I guess you were hunting in coin or coin & jewelry. Many of us will switch to all metal and then re-scan the target. The tid then gives us the ferrous composition and it should settle into the iron range, so I know that I'm likely not going to recover the target, unless I feel like digging iron. I hunt mostly in relic mode anyway, after first doing a noise cancellation in all-metal mode as Prep had suggested in previous posts. For me, relic mode at times seems to be able to hear the subtle difference between clad and the slightly sweeter sound of silver, when recovering dimes and quarters.

My spot is producing. thanks for all the advice guys!!! I found a 5th IH penny and 4 other coins today. All these coins are a first for me. I need to get on-line to research these coins. I will post pics for you guys but until I clean them better you wont be able to see all of them. I dont want to damage them. Got any tricks for cleaning? One coin looks to be a shielded nickle. One is a Barber dime 1900. one appears to be a nickle but thin, probably from rotting away. The face is turned to the left and it looks more like a woman to me.The last coin is a wheat. I brushed off the date and i can see its a 1909! I was afraid to look for the s-vdb until I find out the safest way to clean it. My detecting buddy picked the wrong week to go to Florida!

Safari is great machine,Wish I had one in the late 70's.I have a Marlin 25 Cal lever action rimfire. Was my great grandpa's you are in old spot if you are finding that old of ammo.Mine shoots great still I take it out now and again and whack a Starling or 2 now and again.

I do the best in all metal if you want the old deep coins it works great.Any number 30 and up Indians are 30/31 wheat's 36/37 dimes, quarters and half's 38/39 and large cents I have found it all with mine.Just take your time and you will love it good luck and hope to see some finds

Looks to me like you have gotten the hang of it pretty well!
Thanks for posting the pix.

Thanks, Been givin it hell over there. My partner and I have recovered some treasure. To name a few... one Merc dime, a silver Rosie, several more IH, two more barber nickles, gold plated earring-ruby?? and something I cant figure out. I included a photo... its a quarter sized coin, well oxidized away. You can see pretty clearly on one side the letters C S L. It is very thin now. Looks like it was copper I guess. All around the top and bottom edge is a raised ring that looks like it may have been a "rope" type feature. Any ideas on the C S L coin???????????

Oh and I almost forgot, the CSL coin was a 26 on the Safari. I hit the edge a little with the shovel or the root saw and inside the coin looks more like brass than copper. Normally I would not dig a 26.

Nice finds, a great spot you have there. Could that CSL coin be a button, it looks like it is convex in the center it.

No I doubt it. Not convex. looks like it is a coin, or made to look like a coin. Maybe a token? Poker chip?
