Well I have completed my Deepstar project and ready to try it this weekend. I have been doing great and finding gold on about every trip, but I keep looking out at all the swimmers in chest deep water and thinking if I could go there, I could clean up. So I ordered a Iklite case, APM HEX shaft seals, 4 new pots and Iklite waterproof connectors.When all was done, I had about $220 in parts. Not bad to convert a land detector to a 200 foot dive detector.If it works like I think it will,then if anyone needs part numbers or dealer phone numbers just email me. An ambitious project and I hope it works out. We are now well past the weekend and I'm sure all readers are eager to hear if it worked.
Modifying a Deepstar in this way should result in a very good water detector, although a little bulky due to the size of the battery and pcb. However, for those who do not wish to take this route, there is always the Aquastar which has additional features plus higher small object sensitivity.
A factor to bear in mind, also, is that such a modification is entirely at the owners risk. Kurt is a competent engineer and will likely have success, but I would not recommend such rebuilds generally.
