DEEPSTAR 3 probe compatible with TDI?

I don't use the Deepstar so was wondering if its probe could be an easy add to my TDI (original 200).
Thinking of putting Beachstar on Ebay soon. THANKS Dave

Hi Dave,

Yes the probe can be used on your TDI. In fact I am doing something similar now except I am using a probe from a GS 4 on my TDI. The GS 4 probe is the same as the one for the Deepstar as far as I know.

What you probably should do is to either make a small switchbox or buy one that will allow you to switch between the main coil and the probe. This box would eliminate the need of disconnecting the coil to use the probe. A switchbox to do this can be purchased and is made by Coiltek. It sells for about $50 or so.

There is one recommendation and that is to modify this Coiltek switch box and add a 39 ohm resistor to limit the power to the probe. This will reduce the possibility of excessive buzzing and most likely extend the life of the probe. If you look in your Deepstar you will see a 39 ohm resistor connected to the probe connection. At least that is what Eric did on the older GS 4's and GS 5's also.

So, the transmit signal should go through a 3 watt or greater 39 ohm resistor before it goes to the probe to reduce the power to the probe. Be careful to position this resistor away from wiring because it will get hot. Since both the transmit and the receive wiring is switched by the small switch, I simply removed the transmit wire going to the probe connector and replaced it with the resistor. This added the resistor in line with the transmit power.

Reg......My next thought was was to use the 11" mono on the TDI, (eeeeer TOO much thinking. Better to sell the "whole" Deepstar).
THANKS Dave

Dave,

If your Deepstar is working fine, you might want to sell it as a package and try to find a mono coil that will work. With a little patience you should be able to find one at a reasonable price.

Is there some reason you want a 11" mono? I thought the Deepstar had a 10" coil. I know one of Eric's detectors has a 10" coil. Maybe it was the Aquastar I am thinking about. Actually, it doesn't matter because the depth capability is quite close for both size coils.

Reg.....The Deepstar coil I have measures about 11.5" outside. I did a very quick test yesterday (raining & wind) to make sure everythings OK after acouple years in the closet. Seemed the Deepstar coil had a wider/larger target response than the TDI with its 12". More testing needed. Anyway that got me thinking I need mono for TDI.

The Deepstar coil is called a 11" one. Not because of it's overall dimensions, but because of the dimensions of the coil winding, (11"). Overall outside dimensions would be about 11.5".

Most likely your Deepstar will exceed the performance of your stock TDI.

THANKS Reg, Mr.Bill........The deepscan has a new owner.
It might be time to optimise the TDI. Will the stock coil 12" or any other readily available coil handle a faster delay? Any other mods?
THANKS Dave

That's a trial & error thing. Some coils may, most don't. Can't tell until we put them on the scope, and adjust the unit.
