Depth Reading Conflict

tcp

Member
I hunt in coin mode utilizing ferrous coin and plus 3 on the sensitivity setting. On several occasions I have noticed a big discrepancy between the depth reading on the screen and the pinpoint depth reading. Sometimes it jumps around when I sweep over the target. I was wondering if this is normal. Thanks for your thoughts.

yes, this is normal. If you want the best guess to actual target depth, use the reading when the target is pinpointed. Feels like we JUST talked about this.

As an exercise once you pinpoint the target slowly move your coil away from the target and watch the depth numbers. They will increase until you lose the signal. Same thing happens as you swing the coil while hunting.

Also the lowest reading is the most accurate.

Thanks for the replies. I was back out today and I noticed that the screen depth and the pinpoint depths were three to four inches apart on most of the pre 82 pennies and a few of the trash items that I dug. It also had some trouble with coins near the surface. The readings were similar with deep coins and the wheaties that read between 7 and 9 inches. I am not knocking the detector. It is an excellent detector, especially in trashy areas. I just wanted to know why the discrepancy between the screen depth and the pinpoint depth.
