Depth reading on 6000di pro sl, something I didn't know until today.

This morning I set up a Depth Box so I could see how the depth gauge on my Safari worked as I didn't know what 1" or 6" etc.. looked like on it as it has no numbers only blocks.
Here's a pic of the box I set up.

So I decided to test my Whites with the Blue Max 600 and the Stock 950 coil with different Sig Balance settings. Adjusting the Sig Balance will make your depth reading inacurate as will using a smaller coil.

So I was not getting any accurate reading with the stock 950 coil in the preset settings. This is weird and I though something may be wrong with my detector.
Well that was not the case. You see when I pinpoint, I detune the coil. If you don't know what this is, you move the coil to the side of the target, pull the pinpoint trigger and move the coil over the target just until you get a response(the target should now be on the outer portion of the coil), then you release the pinpoint trigger and pull it again. You now have detuned the outer edge of the coil so you will not hear any response in the pinpoint mode, but now you have narrowed down the response area of the coil to a smaller section within the coil. You can do this again to narrow it down even further, but by doing this I found out that the depth reading is not accurate, it now reads much deeper than the target actually is.
So to get an accurate depth reading with the stock 950 coil you must have the sig balance in preset, and do not detune the coil.

I was able to figure out the proper sig balance with the 600 coil and get an accurate depth reading. With the sig balance adjusted to halfway between preset and max I found I received an accurate reading.

With the 950 coil, if you move the sig balance more toward max, you get a shallower depth reading.

Hope this info helps someone.

I vary the SIG BAL depending on the soil I'm hunting. Wet, dewy grass also affects my unit. And I get all kinds of screwy depth readings with various coils...Try the snooper one time. SOOOOO, I dig every repeatable good signal at 3" or more. I use the depth reading only as a guide...If it reads 4" & I'm digging at 7-8", still without a recovery, AND I'm sure I haven't knocked the target back in the hole, I close it up & go on.
