has anyone ever gone detecting abroad europe ect i am really looking at going somewhere warm for three months next year for a break as the winter in the uk is turning out to be depressing does anyone know about laws in any country and by the way can you hunt in any park in america i dont think that is possible in the uk is every park available really cool when you put your photos of the finds i find it fascinating

I've been a frequent visitor to the UK since 17yo, i wont bother telling you my age now but its been a long time
and i still correspond with those i met while back packing.
ive only been detecting for two years and am quite addicted, my husband has detected since he was 15yo and that is also a long time ago
my family lives in western new york which currently is 20 degrees Farenhight and at some locations here are four feet (3M+ ?) of snow
our last detecting occurred this past saturday with only two inches of snow in a corn field.
i too have visions of warm weather detecting and we will be in california during the holidays and bringing detectors.
many in the east coast, which is the oldest sites as in original colonies and possible revolutionary war relics and beyond but includes spanish reals, etc.
the early relics extends to some southern states for mostly civil war relics(1861-1865)
the retired folks here go to florida and do beach detecting, very different
and others go to southern states as in north and south carolina which can have cooler weather but snow is unusual
there is also california and gold nuggets
in regards to access to parks here, laws about access go to state law and can trickle to county and village
generally in new york you can detect local parks but state parks and national parks require permits for either a small fee or no fee
a small group of us are talking about planning a trip to the UK to detect but we hope to arrange it without the big formal trips that are advertised

that is so interesting thankyou for the explanations of how you work in the usa if you need any addresses or phone numbers for motels let me know i think you will be coming in at the larger airports which keeps you away from lincoln which is full of saxon roman bronze age history hope you do get a trip make sure its after say april or after so you get reasonable weather if you need anything else either add to this thread or make new thread if in later months and name it visit to uk and i will pick your enquiry up i am too addicted as it is an amazing pastime and unfortunately my husband doesnt get it. i have never seen anyone hunt in our parks although i can see that they could be very fruitful i own fifteen acres in lincolnshire and part of this was once owned by the cistercian monks and used as a port in the 12th 13th century about the time robin hood was supposed to be roaming round so quite exciting will catch up with you again my name is helen by the way and i am retired.

i still have a 15 yo and 19 yo so am still working but thinking of retirement with visions of warm weather and detecting
my husband does enjoy detecting but he has issues with my desire to detect daily to exhaustion/not quite that bad
i suppose it has something to do with my success at finding better coins than he has and my two best detecting by myself
im a short female and this can be tricky so safety is a concern, buddy detecting is best but i work for myself so i have some freedom to detect when i can
the two best coins i found are a 1810 large cent in our local park and a 1907silver half barber about thirty minutes away at a detected out property turned public park
i always hear about the finds in the UK and am dazzled, so funny to find 100/200 year old coins/silver here and be thrilled and then at the UK finds of 400 year plus old coins/silver which are almost expected..amazing
your property sounds yummy and i wonder are there net/documents you can research to get a better idea where the best locations for possible finds might be for you on your property
i will pass on your very generous offer to help us do detectiing in the UK, hope this works some day

hi again lovely to get your post yes i have found some information about my land a local gentleman has written a paper on the granges of the cistercian monks some of this information was obtained from archives at the local library and was called the hundred rolls. in here it says that the cardyke which was a water way dug by the romans came down to the grange meaning boats would have sailed right up and on my land how cool is that. general concensus says the cardyke finished over one mile away so this is one thing i am hoping to prove. i hope i havent bored you and can i add that where your friend lives at bath is an amazing place for history i had to smile when i read that you really like detecting as i have to go out everyday i say for one hour but often come back after three or four hours i get so involved it will be great if you get a trip over here as the history is astounding what detectors are you running talk to you soon

This was the first chat room Ive ever participated in
connecting with Helen has been so much fun
It is as if we are long time friends sharing our lives and thoughts
I had concerns that others might find our exchanges less than exciting
However, i welcome your comments Del as encouraging and reassuring
Helen, I find your information fascinating and look forward to your responses
yes it is sooo cool
my interest in history has dramatically increased since I started detecting
I have lived in Africa and in Israel and have had great interest in history for years but it has become a passion since my detecting obsession
I also am guilty of intending to go out for one hour and ending up out for three to four hours and requring to provide an explanation
My relic/detecting club members say I have "the Bug"
Where would you detect if you had no access to private property?
Do you know about detecting rules in public areas in the UK?
I forgot to tell you that you can also detect on school properties if they are public and not private
but it is best to do on Sundays or during vacation times, you cannot/should not detect while school is in session
Most successful locations can be private properties that people have gotton permission to detect on
some of the most successful members in the club use google earth and local historical information
a very successful friend/club member found a British coin from the 1500's at a celar hole, you can imagine how exciting that was
I am now using the Mine Lab E trac and believe it is the best non commercial detector available
Im still learning to use it but am convinced the depth it can go as much as 18-19 inches possibly 2 feet
more detecting experience might prove me right if the snow would only melt

well hi there eva and del i havent put this post using any names as i wasnt sure we could use it as our own chat line as i am to not sure about forums rules but i suppose we are chatting mainly about detecting ok well in uk we ask farmers if we can detect anything found that is designated treasure trrove is valued by specialists and you get half the money and so does the landowner a 4 year old boy has just found a gold necklace belonging to royality and it is deemed to be worth two and half million pounds over four million dollars we are responsible people mainly and realize we are digging up our history so anything that is of a certain age has to be sent to a finds officer if there are any hoards discovered the coroner has to be informed and if you say dig down and suspect you are in a grave and grave goods are coming up you dont just carry on but inform the coroner and people will come out to finish and record correctly the find. i do not know if we are allowed to detect in parks or some land we have as common land which would be extremely interesting. i too am swinging the etrac what a machine i am running in two tone ferrous program which i really like as i am tone deaf i cannot hear these sweet sounds that everybody talks about so just two sounds is great for me i like it split this way so all the 12s and 13s are high pitched i dont like it when the noises are split the other way giving groans to some 12s and 13s that seems senseless to me. what are cellar holes that everyone talks about the snow is going thank goodness and i may be able to get a couple of hours in today i am going out with a differrent attitude with my detector today after reading lots of posts whilst the snow has been here i am going to slow my swing right down so that will be my objective today cover less ground but do the ground i do more thouroughly well i am buzzing that i have you to talk to about detecting catch up with you later and to both of you happy hunting.

my daughter has advised me that 4 feet is closer to 1.3 meters, not the calcultion I previously gave
she also corrected me that I am not in a chat room which is live but instead in a forum
Iv seen the British documentary of the recent find of a hoard of early gold,etc. by a detectorist on the land of a friend/farmer
the farmer responded to inquiries that there was a search for dead bodies to hinder any poaching or further disturbances
a smart response and I am aware of the procedures you described for significant finds because of this documentary
there is no such thing here, perhaps because there is a fear bout Big Brother watching
some valuable finds have been known to be returned if there is some identification
some of us are called upon by those who have lost an item and retrieval is requested,these efforts can result in success and often do
a friend has himself on a internet list in his area and has been called upon to find lost items
cellar holes are where a house used to be and is no more, the older the house the older the hole
research is done and these cellar holes are searched out on state and private lands
there are potential excellant finds available and we all get very excited to search out these cellar holes
the find by this 4 year old was reported in a monthly detecting magazine I receive and enjoy......stunning
I almost got out today to detect because the snow was melting at 46 F temperature but circumstances prevented me to my great disappointment
we are expecting another storm but I hope they are wrong
tomorrow is the detector club Holiday party and it will be the third party this weekend for me but I am looking forward to it anyway
