Detecting memories

Mike was asking for detecting memories, so I thought I would kick it off by telling everyone how I got introduced to detecting.

My family was sort of poor when growing up. We never received anything new accept for birthdays and Christmas.
I was seven when I got a metal detector for my birthday. It was blue, had a horse on it and I think it was called a Mustang. It only had one knob on it that must have been for disc.

Anyway, friends of my parents were having a Church cookout/ pool party at their house and as we packed up the car I decided to take the detector with me. We also took my grandmother, because she always spent Sundays with our family.

Towards the end of the cookout my brother and I decided to try our luck at finding treasure. All the kids there were pretty excited to watch as we search the side yard of the home. One of the boys who lived there wanted us to try the front yard, by a large area of rocks and bushes. I was surround by at least eight kids while searching this area. Before long my detector was beeping like crazy and every time I would clear the area with my foot coins would pop up. Kids were having a great time recovering all the coins. We must have pulled out three or four dollars worth of coins that day. It was so much fun and I couldn't believe the luck I was having.

We then made our way to the backyard, not finding anything as we went. There was a group of people standing together that included my grandmother. She kept motioning me to come on over. She wanted me to detect around her so she could watch. As I started, once again my machine started to beep. I could see in the grass pennies all around. I knew at once that she must have been tossing pennies down for me to find. I ended up with a hand full of pennies but I felt bad. My grandmother was very poor and I felt horrible taking her money. Later I went up to my mom and asked if I should give my grandma back the money I found. She assured me that it was fine and my grandma was having a great time watching us so I should keep all my finds.

On the car ride home I was in my glory counting all the money I found. I also couldn't believe all the money we found in those rocks in the front yard. My brother later let it slip that the boy who made us check the front yard had actually planted all the money for me to find.

It warms my heart every time I think back about this boy and my grandma planting this money for me to find.

Thanks for reading.... I would love to read your stories!

Great beginnings. Now let's here some more.

Wonderful story and great beginning. Like you, our family was very poor. I've been semi-involved with the hobby since the mid-70's with a White's Coin Master a friend of mine gave me that belonged to her late husband many years earlier. I must admit I didn't find much with it over the years. It wasn't until I purchased one of the 'New' Garrett Ace 250's that I began to find stuff in places I had hunted numerous times before. Several years later I sold the Ace 250 and purchased a Minelab X-terra 70 and, as the 'ole saying goes, I haven't looked back since. Great hobby!

memories of detecting was returning a 1958 Class RIng I found in the Fox River. I located the man through the High School Alumni website. I had the website contact person give the guy my phone number and told that I found his class ring and wished to return it. He called me and I gave him the run down of how I found it and told him I did not wish any reward as I had lost mine at one time and it was returned to me. He did send me a card and the money I spent on postage. It was a great feeling for me to be able to return his ring to him.

Martin,
We have to get together for sure this summer to detect since we are so close to each other.

Mike,
That's pretty cool that you were able to return something. I have never had the privilege to do that yet.
