Detector Problem?

I have a GTP1350 I dont know how many of you guy's have one yet but since its basicaly the same as the 1250 maybe one of you 1250 users can help me out.
When I first got it I had been using the GTAx550 and loved it. Especially the bell tone. The 1350 was set on tone I.D. and drove me crazy! All the honking and squaking at the different targets, I couldnt make any sense of it. (been hunting an old house site alot...lots of trash) Anyway I called Mary at Garrett and she told me to turn the tone I.D. off and try that..Worked alot better but no bell tone for coins. O.K. I can live with that but I thought it was supposed to have belltone I.D.
Sunday I started thinking...here I am hunting an old house site occupied continuously since the 1860's and I havent found a coin yet deeper tha 4". So I dug a hole 4.5" deep and put in a nickle and covered it back up...my detector couldn't find it...then I put in dime...couldnt detect that either.
Now after that long set up..(thanks for being patient) I have two questions...shouldnt the 1350 have a belltone like the 550 and 1250 and second is there something wrong with the dectector that it couldnt even find a nickle 4.5" deep? Was it the freshly dug soil that had something to do with its not detecting the nickle or dime?

Grady, I hope someone with a 1350 will give you further suggestions, but I'll tell you what little I know about the 1250. It does belltone if it is set up to do so. Are you sure you have belltone turned on? As far as depth, a lot of things could come into play there. A newly buried coin won't pick up as deep as one that has weathered in place for a while, but you should still pick up a nickel at 4.5", UNLESS you are in highly mineralized soil. Your detector, like most modern ones, automatically tunes out ground mineralization, but if it has to compensate for a lot of it, it greatly reduces your depth. In the red dirt I usually hunt in, I often encounter areas where I can't pick up small coins much deeper than 4". Place your nickel or dime on a wood block at least a foot above the ground and air test. If you get a much deeper reading than you do in the ground, then you know you are dealing with a mineralization problem. Another indicator of mineralized soil is to hold your coil 2 feet above the ground, then hold the pinpoint button while you lower to the ground. In highly mineralized soil your detector will sound off even if there is no metal there. HB

Grady,
The 1350 does have the factory reset, like most other recent Garrett detectors. Just hold down the power button until you get a double beep - it takes about 10 seconds.
To cut down the number of sounds the 1350 makes, try hunting with Tone ID on, and keep Profiling turned off (with a tap of the Pinpoint button) until you have a specific target you want to check the size of. Belltone in the 1350 only functions when Tone ID is on and Profiling is not activated. When Profiling is active, special Profiling audio replaces the belltone.
As for the nickels, you should be able to pick them up easily at 6 inches (and beyond) in an air test using factory default settings. If you are getting less than 5 inches in air after doing a factory reset, I'd say something is wrong with the machine.
Happy Hunting!

Turn tone id on and profiling off.Make sure after pinpointing to turn profiling off again by pressing the pinpoint/profiling button for a short time.
If you hunt an old house side with the stock coil the coil will see to many targets at once and that drives the target id crazy.Get a 4.5 inch coil for that.
If your detector can't see a dime or nickel at 5 inch with the standard coil target masking could be the reason.A bigger iron target may be close to the coin so the detector discs out the iron and the coin.
I have a 1350 too and have no problems finding nickels and dimes at 7 inch.

Due to an effect known as " Metallurgical Phenomenon" freshly buried coins are difficult to impossible to detect. Try burying some in a barkchip playground. I have the 1350 along with several other Garretts and it will definetly go deeper than that.
When using your 1350 in tone ID and profiling, turn your sensitivity down to about 6.5. This detector is sensitivity sensitive. And you shouldn't have to turn anything off in order to use your detector. That's what you bought it for - to avail yourself of these features.

Well guy's i'm feeling a little sheepish right now. First let me thank all of you for your responses and advice. Now let me tell you all about an amazing discovery I found. It actually came with my detector! I'm not sure what it's about ....a little booklet that says OWNERS MANUAL...I know I looked through it when I got the detector and then tossed it aside cause I just knew I WAS TOO SMART TO NEED IT . Today I read through it again and what do you know all my questions were answered...pretty neat huh

Surprising what you can find in that little book once you actually read it.
