Detector rule number 1

I noticed in Andys book that Bill Paxton and myself has the same rule about learning a new detector. That rule is "never trade or give up on a detector until it has paid for itsself." I think too many people dismiss or give new detectors a bad review without spending the time needed to see their true strength. A lot of you have been doing this a longgggg time, but the new users often dismiss a detector that may be well suited for them based on our quick reviews.

I have done allot of trading up over the years, when I started metal detecting for gold I bought a new Eureka gold detector but got frustrated when my friend was finding nuggets that I had walked over with his GP Extreme, so I bought his and started finding nuggets. coin shooting has been no different started with a bounty hunter went to the F2 then the X-Terra 50, and the 70, found lots with these machines but recently went to the SE and It made a huge difference. I am happy with the detectors I have now GP Extreme X-Terra 50 and the Explorer SE they are all good for what I need them for it just took a little time to find the right ones. The people from this site have helped me make better decisions as to which detector to use. And I thank each and every one of you:thumbup:

Most of the machines ive used lived up to their billing... but not until I learned to use them. Impulse buying drives every hobby ours is no different. I had another top end machine before i got the SE as well. Because Im "cheap" maybe and dont sell my machines if i get frustrated, what i have learned has really helped me as I look at changes being made verses the price im paying for that technowledgy. What id like to pass on to new users of any detector is dont expect mericals. Even experienced hunters have a dramatic lose in their finds when being introduced to new equipment. To those new members, dont beleave everything you read, dont impulse buy.. give new models time to prove themselves to you, take the time to learn your equipment, and enjoy the hobby.
