WHITES PI PRO IF YOU PLANED TO HUNT 90% OF TIME IN WATER. OTHERWISE WHITES BEACH HUNTER ID,MINELAB EXCAL 1000,THE ABOVE 3 CAN GET WET.. MINELAB EXPLORER AND WHITES DFX ARE GREAT TOO BUT DON'T DROP THEM IN THE SURF!!

Coin,
I large percentage of hunters use the Minelab brand detectors, as they are not bothered by the black sand conditions. Down on the south end from Atlantic City to the Cape, the condition vary beach to beach. It is important to think about if you are going to hunt in the water or the sand.....This matters in your selection.

we have way too much rusty iron in our beaches and PI's can not effectively eliminate it...especially the small iron. Some PI's can reject or ID large pieces of rusty iron. As Joe said a Minelab Multifrequency Machine such as a Sov GT (also any previous version of the Sov)or Explorer are excellent choices for the Jersey Shore and if you plan on spending time in the water as well then the Minelab Excalibur would make be a good choice. The Fisher CZ series of detectors work well here as well but most of the serious beach hunters here using Minelab. JMHO

You can find usually find a used Sov on the Classified in the $300-$400 range. It's an inexpensive way to get started with a machine that works great on the beach.

I've had 3 and they work great. The unit does not discriminate though. You will eventually be able to auditorily discriminate with it though. I ran my last voyage with mine on wednesday. Sold it to buy Aquasearch. If you do decide on the Mark II, you will need to expoxy the underside of the coil or it will wear through and false. Message me privately if you decide to go with this particular unit and I will help you get started with it. Found much gold & silver with this unit.
