Determining ground conditions..

Hey all, when detecting, how do you determine whether you have difficult or normal conditions in your soil you're detecting in? I currently have my e-trac set at difficult but I am just guessing because the only thing I know about my soil is it has a lot of red clay.

When its hard packed or pretty normal digging im in difficult the only time I switch to neutral is in plowed fields where the soil is more fluffy.

Just me, but I've always used Auto Sensitivity to inform of such. I have an old house where some parts of the yard indicate no more than 6 on straight auto, but down the road, can jump to 27-29.

I would leave it at the difficult setting and just go slow. You wont loose out. I have read intersting things that the etrac can have a problem holding on to high conductive big targets like silver dollars in the neutral setting. There is even a vid of this on youtube. I think it is called etrac silver coin test or something like that.
