Deus or Etrac?

Hello all,

I have been using a Garrett GTI 2500 for a few years now, and have not been very happy with it. I am a coin hunter, and hunt old houses, schoolhouses, etc in the country. I am thinking about a Deus or Etrac. Any suggestions? Many thanks. - Dale

If you have ton of iron trash in your hunting areas, the Deus cannot be beaten, as it is a killer in those kind of places and the wireless system makes it a pure pleasure to swing around.

Both if you can afford it. They are excellent machines, I know because I own both. I'm fairly new to the Deus, so I'm sure that I have not come close to finding out it's full potential. I have many years experience with the E-Trac and it's a coin/silver killer, one of the best on the market. The Deus separates/handles the trash/iron a little better because of it's reaction/recovery speed. Fit the E-Trac with a smaller coil and it will produce as well in trashy areas. This is a hard choice and I really cannot pick one over the other. It may just come down to how much you want to spend and whether the Deus wireless feature and overall weight (2.2 pounds) really excite you. I know I can swing the Deus all day vs. having to use a Swingy Thingy to do that with my E-Trac.

I have seen a E-trac nail+coin video tested with 5" dd coil and it was quite a pain to watch as the E-trac performed poorly in that video and in the similar test the Deus performed with flying colors with the 9" dd coil.

If E-trac performs as poorly in real hunting situation, the Deus can beat the E-trac fitted with a 5" dd coil and unfortunately the video cannot be shown, as the makers Youtube account got deleted and i can see why.:ban:

I agree with you 100%, the Deus outperforms the E-Trac even with a smaller coil. With the E-Trac, it's the size of the coil that helps separate out the good targets from trash vs. the Deus does it with recovery/reaction speed. Even with "Fast" on, the E-Trac is nowhere close to the recovery/reaction speed of the Deus.

Hello again,

Thanks for the responses. The light weight surely sounds great. What concerns me about the Deus is - battery charging / having to send back to the manufacturer; the fact that is was made for a European market; ID readings not accurate at deep levels when compared to the Etrac (coil size - possible upgrade this year may fix the problem, but it is expensive - any word on if it is our yet?; and price. It sounds like the Etrac and the Deus are so close, that it really does not matter THAT much, since both will find good stuff. hmmm... still thinking about which one - can't buy both. Thanks, Dale

Xp Deus has a repair service in Usa, no need to send the machine to the manufacturer.

what about a Teknetics omega or similar fast machines if this Deus relies on speed to find targets there are plenty of fast machines out there that are much cheaper and are just as light JMHO.

The light weight surely sounds great - It is great. 2.2 pounds with everything attached, less then 2 pounds with the control unit not attached.

What concerns me about the Deus is - battery charging / having to send back to the manufacturer - You can change the battery yourself on the control unit and head phones. It's only the coil you send to the Sevice Center (which is located in the USA). According to everything that I've read, even after 400 + charges, the batteries still maintain 80% of capacity and should last you many years before needing to replace.

The fact that is was made for a European market - True the ID #'s are geared toward what is found in Europe, but once you've learned where the US coins fall on the ID scale it should not matter.

ID readings not accurate at deep levels when compared to the Etrac - It's true that the E-Trac will ID at greater depths, but the E-Trac will also bounce around as well. If you hunt by sounds vs. ID#'s it is not an issue.

Coil size - possible upgrade this year may fix the problem, but it is expensive - any word on if it is our yet?; and price - The 9" stock coil is a nice size as it really works well in trashy areas and still big enough to cover some ground. Remember, that the Deus is a very fast machine, which will allow you to swing a little faster then the E-Trac. The 13" larger coil will run you about $500.00, which includes the hardware, coil cover, and shaft. Their expensive because the coil contains the electronics that analyze the target and sends a radio link to the control unit and head phones.

Do you know anyone that has an E-Trac or Deus? The best way to find out what you would prefer, is to try them out.

Can you please expand on why you make the statement underlined in the red section?

True the ID #'s are geared toward what is found in Europe

ID numbers on any detector have nothing to do with Europe or USA or UK.....etc,

Whites normalise their VDI's, at whatever frequencies, to those value-equivalents at 7 KHz (approx)

On the Deus, they're just non-normalised, frequency-related representations of conductivity.

The reason for that, is to allow optimum discrimination, by frequency selection, for different conductivities and thicknesses of targets.

Hi Matt,

I should have clarified my statement a little more. I was not talking about the detector itself, I was really trying to refer to the manual (page 9) and how it is geared toward European targets and users. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for all your help. I am going to buy a Deus, as I like that it is wireless, light, and seems like a great detector. I am getting excited! Interesting side not - I went out yesterday with my Garrett GTI 2500, that I have not had very good luck with, and found an 1806 large cent! - Dale

You are welcome Dale. I've owned Garrett's before and they are very dependable machines. I would keep the GTI as your backup for the Deus. PM me if you would like to get some ideas as to where to get your Deus.

Hi Steve,

You read my mind - I was just going to ask where I should buy one! Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Dale

Dale - I tried to send you a PM, but you do not have PM privileges yet since you are so new. Give me your e-mail address and I'll give you my thoughts that way.

I got them both myself, but the wife does not know that I bought the XP Deus or she would kill me. She looks at it all the time, but still thinks it's my old Whites M6. It's good that she knows nothing about detectors or I'd be divorced right now. She spends that much on her hair, nails (fingers and toes) in a year, so I do not feel too bad about sneaking the XP Deus. I'll tell her one of these days, when she's in a real good mood.
