Diamonds... How To Tell a Fake?

While water hunting, my 9 yr old son found a 14K earring with what appears to be a diamond mounted... if it's real, it's about 3/4 ct in size!
This is the third earring that he's found just snorkeling around and looking on the bottom... he's luckier than I am, when he gets a little bigger I need to shove a detector into his hands.
It's hard enough to scratch glass, are there any other tests that I can conduct in the kitchen to see if it's fake or not? If I can sell it, I'm going to put the money into a savings account for him. Or heck, if he wants to squander it on toys... his find, his money!

Not sure if this works or if it's a old wifes tale...But put the earing in a glass of water. Supposedly you cannot see a diamond in water. Or if you really want to know for sure take it to a jewelry store and they can test it. They have a neat little probe that they touch the tip of it to the diamond. But if he finds stuff like this without a detector in his hands just think of what he will find with one <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Good Luck
