Did a Little Relic Hunting Today

Just got out for a couple of hours...to a POUNDED field that's been hunted by many folks for many years. At one time I used to dig 15 minnieballs there on my lunch hour. Not so any more, but to those with patience and a slow swing you can find a few deep targets that got away from everybody else. The Explorer II was on the scent. I ended up with 3 bullets and 3 buttons for the outing. All were at the ragged edge of detection. Here are a few pictures from the field. Happy hunting!

Hey Mike, good things come to those with diligence ! Nice finds. Ya gotta love that Explorer. I hope you find many more Mike and God Bless ya.

Hey Mike! I'm just curious? Looking at your photos you are relic hunting on a manicured type lawn with the standard ML coil. You are still making finds on the fringes of depth. It's my experience I get an extra inch in depth with the 15" WOT coil in nice surface conditions. How come you're not hunting this perfect site with a WOT coil? Happy Hunting

Yeah, I do like the Dual-Digital mode. I am constantly switching between Smartfind and Digital, because I want to have a good feel for both...and I do...but I still find myself preferring the Digital mode. May be a throwback to my DFX days, or more recently to the Sovereign Elite and Quattro. Once you get to know the numbers it's hard not to want to look. I like seeing the Ferrous number, though the Smartfind screen does have it's benefits too.

Of course with the larger coil there is the potential for deeper finds. I don't have the WOT but I do have a 12.5" coil and have searched that field with it and found a few things. That particular day I didn't plan on hitting that spot and only had the stock coil with me, so that's why I was running it. I don't see a great deal of difference on depth anyway with the larger coils...in my opinion they're very valuable as far as ground coverage for that type of a spot, the beach, woods, etc. but only provide a marginal depth increase. And then there's the trade-off on pinpointing and weight.

That is a nice hunt spot, as far as they go. Though it's not as manicured as it might look. Last week it was knee-high grass. They just run a big tractor mower over it now and then and in these pictures it happened to be freshly mowed. Next time I go I'll hit it with the bigger coil again and see what comes up.
