Hey there fellas!!! I'm back with another post of some finds I was able to recover on Saturday. Before I begin, I want to let you all know that the grey Mercury Dime was found on Friday Night in my brother's yard, which was kind of a surprise since he lives in a Trailer Court and didn't think that there would be anything of old present. I also found an Old Bullet here along with a few Clads. I was hoping to find some Jewelery but it didn't happen. I would also have had this post up last night but had to help do some sand bagging for the boss's brother last night so with that said....let's get to it.
Saturday, Dale and I headed out in the search for a few keepers to add to our collections and hopes of making some super nice finds for the upcoming club meeting. Tim decided to stay home since he was feeling under the weather on Friday Night and he also wanted to stick around home to keep an eye on approaching flood waters from the river. He did sound like he was feeling much better Saturday Morning and I bet he wished he could have tagged along and got a few keepers himself. I just hope Tim...that you don't get flooded out and look forward in seeing you on Friday Night.
Now onto the story!
Dale and I headed out and started detecting a small town that we drove thru early in the morning. There was a Park and a Ball Diamond that was on one end of town so we decided to try it since there was a few older homes nearby and we hoped that the Park was from this time period. We started hunting and about an hour later, we decided to move onto another site. All we could come up with was the normal Clad which was kind of odd since the Park did look somewhat old and had an old sidewalk running down the north end of it that was completely covered with grass. We didn't even get a Wheatie but that was soon to change since the next site was where Tim and I had been a few weeks ago and got a Barber Quarter and a lot of nice older Coins from.
We got to site 2 and we decided to check out the rest of the town first to see if there was anything else that we could try later on after hunting the Park. There was another section of Park on the far end form this Park so we decided to try our luck here since there was an Easter Egg Hunt going on in the section where I found many Older Coins at a few weeks ago. This part of the Park, Tim and I didn't see last time and Dale and I would soon find out if it was any good or not.
There was a hill on this other section of Park, so we started our search here. I wasn't finding much of anything except a Clad Coin here and a Clad Coin there but it seemed that Dale had found something further up on the hill since I noticed him working a particular area where he had just dug a target from. I kept working and decided to walk across the road to another section and see if there was some deeper targets here. I worked it for a short time and noticed that the base of some of the tree's didn't have the roots visible...meaning that fill had been added at one point in this section. After digging a few Deep Screw Caps, I decided to walk back over to the hill and work what looked like an old road that went up the hill. It was completely overgrown with grass so it hadn't seen any use for a long time. I got about half-way to the top and got a screamer of a signal that read 30 on Digital and read about 6"-8" Deep. I first thought Quarter since the high number but soon found out when I cut the plug that it turned out to be a Mercury Dime. I was on my way in trying to achieve 10 Silver in one day! I finally made it up by Dale and asked what he had found. He replied back, "an Indian Head and a Wheat". I told him I just dug a Merc and then we continued working the hill hoping for a few more keepers. We continued working with minimal results. Dale found a Silver Rosie and a Rock that he thought was possibly an Indian Artifact or Tool. It was shaved on 2 sides it looked like and smooth. I didn't think it was so I didn't think much about it. I was down on the bottom of the hill before we left to the other section of Park and a gentleman along with kids stopped by and asked if we had any luck. Dale likes being secretive so I don't think he told him about any of his finds. I was digging a hole and looking for a target at the time and finally located it. It turned out to be another Mercury Dime dated 1924 that was a good 8" Deep or so. The guy asked what I had just found and I told him a 1924 Mercury Dime. He was pretty excited and told me that the Coin had been sitting there more than 80 years. I kinda chuckled to myself since the Merc was worn quite a bit and it was most likely lost in the 40's or 50's. After this, Dale asked the gentleman about the hill and apparently there was a pavilion that sat up top and he also told us that Indians use to camp up there since there were many Indian Artifacts found on the hill. So maybe Dale has something! I told Dale a few minutes ago the people left from the other section of the Park so we worked our way back to the vehicle. Dale wanted to try this other part since he has Barber Coinage on the brain all the time and he knew that there had to be a few left. Dale was using his New Minelab Safari and he was very pleased with it's performance and he thought it had just as good of depth as his XS. He dug many coins during the day that were in the 8"-10" range so depth the Safari has. He switched to the XS in the next part of the Park due to a malfunctioned X-1 Probe.
We parked and got the equipment out and started detecting. We started in an area neither Tim or I had tried last time. First thing I noticed was the amount of Iron and Trash present and tried to tell Dale that we should use the Joey Coils. He didn't care since he had Barber on the mind and wanted to land some in his pocket so I decided to keep the Pro Coil on as well. I did locate 2 Wheats in amongst this rubbish so I know that there has to be other Coins here and would be found with a smaller coil. We worked towards the area where I had found the last Barber's at and Dale wanted to know the exact area's where they came from...hoping that I passed a few up last time. Well, Dale couldn't find anything in these area's so Dale moved to another area. I hunted and hunted and the targets seemed to be fairly sparse but that didn't discourage me at all since a site is truly never worked out. I kept working and every now and then I would pop out a Wheat. The finds were coming but we had to work for them. I was finding a few more Silver while Dale was only finding Pennies but he did have 3 Injuns and I didn't have 1 yet so I needed to buckle down and try and find me one before the day was thru. I got into a section and received a Deeper 26 on Digital. I knew it had to be an Indian so I cut a plug and at about 8", I felt it on the end of my Lesche. Popped it out and it was a 1900 with a small gouge. Just what I wanted! Oh well! I got another signal about 6' away and had Dale go over it. He said it sounded good and I told him I had just dug an Indian. I dug a plug as Dale watched and at about 10", out pops a Silver Disk. I picked it up and seen the back first. I saw how worn it was and knew it had to be a Seated Dime. I flipped it over and it was...only thing was that it was dateless. I didn't realize the stars until my second look so this Coin would be from 1840-1859. Still a great find none the less.
We decided to head up town to get something to eat and drink and take a short break. When we come back, we both tried the Joey Coils. About a minute out of the Van, I got a signal that read 27 but wasn't a solid hit. I had Dale try it and he said it was choppy also and didn't think it was anything good. I knew that it was a Wheatie before I dug it and about 6" Deep, it surfaced. Dale couldn't believe it. We continued hunting until dark and made a few more finds. I dug 2 more Wheats and a Merc with the Joey and decided to try the Ball Diamond again. We tried it earlier, Dale finding a Wheatie only and I found 2 Merc's, a Rosie (the coin I needed for the Slam on Dimes), and 2 Wheats, 1 being stuck to 2 Indian Heads that came from a good 10"+ Deep. Dale continued using the Joey and only found a Merc. I tried the Ball Diamond again with the Pro Coil and was rewarded with 2 more Wheats, another Silver Rosie and a Silver Quarter. Dale did well and had a Silver Quarter also and 5 other Silver's for the day along with 3 Indians and a bunch of Wheats. The next day he called and told me he had found a 1926-d Merc in AU condition which books for $50. He was kinda disgusted since he never found a Barber and it really burned him when we were walking back to the Van. I got a Deep 27 and dug the target thinking Wheatie. Out pops a Dime and wouldn't you know it...it was a Barber!
My take for the day was 12 Silver (13 with Friday's Merc)...which were 1 Silver Washington Quarter dated 1946-d, 1 Dateless Seated Dime (1840-1859), 2 Barber Dimes dated 1899,1914-d, 7 Mercury Dimes dated 1917,1924,1935,1942-d,1943,1944,1945-s(Micro-S), and 2 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1952-d and 1954-d. I found 3 Indians dated 1900 and (2)1902 along with a 1902 V-Nickel. I accumulated 21 Wheats which were dated 12,13,17,19,(2)19-d,19-s,20-d,(2)27-d,28-s,29,29-d,(2)41-d,44,45,46-d,49-d,55-d, and 58-d. I also found a few Misc. that will be in another post below this. Hope this wasn't too long of a post and hope you enjoyed the finds and the story behind them. Thanks for looking and Good Luck and HH to you all out in the field.
