Did some huntin' this weekend. Here comes the Silver Train! :devil:Long Story but good.

It all started late Friday Night. Loran, a friend with a Garrett Ace 250 came over and I was chatting with him and told him I should go outside to dig some Clad for the heck of it since there was only an Hour left of daylight. He then told me he had gotten a Signal with his Garrett that he couldn't find the other day, so I loaded up the Trusty Explorer XS and went over behind his Apartment Building with him. He showed me where it was and I went over it. I told him right away that it was Iron. So I started detecting in the backyard and he went and got his Garrett. We started hunting and there were so many Nails and Iron that I knew it wasn't going to work with the Stock Coil on so I told Loran to run me back home so I could get the Joey Coil. He had gotten a Signal and wanted me to check it out for him previously before I got the Joey Coil. I went over it and there was something there, but it was so Choppy due to all the Iron, that I told him I didn't know exactly what. The ID was all over the place and so were the Tones. I dug down and got a Medium Tone, so I removed more Dirt and seen laying in the hole a Penny. I thought Wheat Penny but it turned out to be a very nice 1902 Indian Head with the Diamonds still visible on the Ribbon. It looked like it was dropped the day it was minted. I gave it to him but he told me to keep it since I dug it. I told him that he found the Target so he should keep it. He took it. We had gotten an Indian or 2 off of the Boulevard the last time we hunted this area so we knew there was a possibility of Older Coins. I was going to post it along with the other Indians but his kids got a hold of it and lost it somewhere in the Apartment. I guess I should have kept it. Anyways, after this Coin appeared, this is when I got the Joey Coil. I didn't find much of anything else but I did get a Mercury Dime with it. I will have to try that spot again sometime. Saturday, Tim, Dale, and I did some Road Trippin'. We tried a few different sites and every site we stopped at, we found Old Coins. Tim got out and found a 1893 Barber Quarter right off the start, his 6th one for the year. First thing I dug was a 1924-d Wheat Penny, which starts out in G-4 at $20. I found a few Indians and some Wheats also. I also got 5 Silver at this 1st Site. The 2nd Site was an Old School Site that had a newer School built on so we tried the Boulevards and Yard for a bit. As soon as we started hunting, we knew that it had been detected before due to lack of Coins. I was going down the Boulevard in hopes of finding a Half Dollar but didn't get one. I did find a 1901 Indian Head and on the way back towards the Car, got a 28 at 6". Dug it and I seen a Silver Quarter in the hole. I picked it up and said "what the hell is this!". I removed the dirt in hopes of some clue as too what it was. I found just a few outlines on the reverse that tells me that it is either a later Capped Bust Quarter or what I think it is most likely, a Worn Seated Quarter. I matched it up with another Seated Quarter and finally got the Quarter in the right position to know which way it was facing with the other Quarter. I just wish there was some detail left on the obverse to tell me that it is Seated or Capped Bust. I know it isn't Barber for sure. Hopefully in the post you will be able to see the outlines also. I will do a side by side comparison with another Seated Quarter to better clarify why I think what I do on this Worn Quarter. Dale found a few Wheats and a 1923 Standing Liberty Quarter. Not sure if Tim found anything or not. We then left since it was already 4pm and needed to move onto another site. We found another spot that we were looking for and got out and started hunting. As soon as I turned on the XS, I walked a short ways and found a Merc. Then walked a bit more and then a Barber Dime. Started walking and found a Silver Roosevelt Dime. Dale looks at Tim and tells him I just dug 3 Silver in a row, in a matter of 5 Minutes and it didn't stop there either. I myself was thinking where are all the Pennies at? I then walked a short distance and found another Barber Dime. I was on FIRE! I would say within 30-45 Minutes I had 9 Silver with only a couple Wheats. I hardly found any Pennies, just Silver. I found a Pocket Spill also. The first Coin was a 65 Memorial. Darn I thought! Covered the Hole and swept over it. Another Signal just in front of this Plug. Dug it and found a Silver Roosevelt Dime, then covered and another Signal. Re-opened the Hole and Clad Dime. Darn!! Closed it and about 3" away from there was yet another Signal. Dug that one and out pop's another Silver Roosevelt Dime. By the time we left, I found 3 Barber Dimes from here and a few Merc's and Roosevelt's, which gave me 10 from this spot alone. Don't really know the specifics as to what Dale or Tim found but I do know Tim found a Merc in the beginning and Dale had found a Silver Quarter. I do know that I was the Lucky one walking into all the Silver here at this site. We then headed to another spot we ran across when looking for this site, so we could get an idea what was in this last stop of the day. This spot was harder and soon I found out why. Most of the Coins were only about 4" Deep, thus any Detector could easily get them. I finally found an Indian Head and of all the Indians found this weekend, I had to hit it. It was in very nice shape with almost Full Diamonds showing. DARN IT!!!! I then found a few Wheats before we called it a day. Dale got 7 Silver on Saturday and Tim got I believe 4. I found 15 Silver on Saturday, you just have to walk over them and I was doing just that. Sunday, I was going to do some Clad Hunting in town but decided to heck with it and headed back to the Fairgrounds that I started pounding last Fall. I got there around 2pm and started hunting until 8pm. That was 6 Hours of Hunting. The size of the area I covered with the Joey Coil was about 75' x 40'. That's right fella's! That is how slooooow I was detecting, to a Crawl, in the same spot I pounded last year and thought I had it all. I found a Wheat Penny with 3 Nails directly over top of the Coin at about 7" Deep. That was very Impressive! I then got a Signal that gave 18, then 20, and every once in awhile, it would go up to 26, but just for a split second. It was DEEP and I wanted to know what was giving such a weird Signal. Dug down just to the bottom of the Top Cap on the X-1 Probe and found what it was. It was a Mercury Dime dated 1927. Not sure how long the Probe is but that is DEEP for a Joey Coil, and I could get a Signal back and forth each way also, but the reading was all over the place due to the Depth and the Iron Content in the ground. I ended up getting in that 6 Hours 29 Wheats, 1 Barber Dime, a few Merc's and a Couple Roosevelt's. I also got a Shocker as well. I got a 28 and it showed only about 3" Deep. I thought most likely a New Coin but best dig it since I found a couple Wheats that were even shallower than this Target. Dug it and seen the Reeded Edge and thought, "Yes, a Silver Quarter!". Picked it up and found out it was a 1945-d Walking Liberty Half Dollar. WOW!!!! I also found 2 Older Jefferson Nickels. Anyways, this post is getting WAAAAAAY too LOOOOOOONG. Better get on with it. So here's the Totals for this past weekend. I found a Whopping 23 Silver! They consisted of 1 Walking Liberty Half Dollar dated 1945-d, 1 Worn Out Seated or Capped Bust Quarter, 4 Barber Dimes dated 1898-s,1905,1905-O (I think it's a Large O),1907, 8 Mercury Dimes dated (2)1918,1927,1936,1941-d,1941-s,1943-s,1945-d, and 9 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1947,1948-s,1950,(2)1953-d,1958-d,1961-d, and (2)1964-d. The Seated Quarter is sitting 45 Degrees because there is outlines of the Chest of the Bird and where the Neck starts and also the Wing. It's tough to get a Pic on here but it's there. I also found 2 Older Jefferson Nickels dated 1946-d and 1953-d. The rest of my finds is coming up so stay tuned. Enjoy! Good Luck and HH.[attachment 90049 DirtySilver.jpg][attachment 90048 CleanedSilver.jpg][attachment 90052 SeatedQuarter.jpg][attachment 90053 SeatedQuarterBampW.jpg][attachment 90050 DirtyNickels.jpg][attachment 90055 CleanedNickels.jpg]

Mercy!! I would be happy with one silver, that is awesome. Thanks for sharing!!

Here's the rest of the finds for the weekend. I had found 7 Indians but 1 got lost due to Loran's kids so that is not in the Post. The Indians are dated 1898,(2)1901,(3)1902, and 1907. The Cents for the most part are Trashed due to bad ground environment. Oh Well! For Wheat Pennies, I dug 55 of them. They are dated 09,10,11,11-d,14,17,(3)18,19,24-d,27,27-d,28-d,29,29-d,30-d,34-d,35-d,36,37,(2)39,40,(3)40-d,(2)40-s,41-d,42,(2)42-d,44,(5)44-d,45,(5)45-d,46,(2)46-d,(2)48-d,50-d,51,53-d, and (2)56-d. I also found 1 Canadian Penny dated 1957 that is Pictured with the Wheats. For Misc. Finds, I found 4 Copper Rings, a Kids Ring with a Buddha on it, a GM Key, a Red Bead Necklace, a Sailboat Pendant, what's left of a Sterling Silver Ring with Hearts, and a couple of Aluminum Tags that you could engrave your name on at Fairs. I also found a Small Button with what looks like the Boys Scouts Emblem on it that reads Be Prepared, Pat.11.9.11 or 1.19.11. Cool!!! That finally does it for the finds folks. Hope your hunts are as fun as mine are. Good Luck and HH to you all on your next outings. Thanks for looking.[attachment 90058 DirtyIndians.jpg][attachment 90059 CleanedIndians.jpg][attachment 90060 DirtyWheatsandCanadianCent.jpg][attachment 90066 CleanedWheatsandCanadianCent.jpg][attachment 90061 DirtyMisc..jpg][attachment 90062 CleanedMisc.jpg]

I really couldn't believe the amount of Silver I was finding this time. I thought 10 was going to be tough but ended up doubling it and then some. Just goes to show you never know what may happen on your next hunting trip out. Thanks again Tinfoil and Good Luck and HH to you in your adventures outdoors in this great hobby of ours.

Last year I had a Post of 31 Silver for a weekend. That was an Amazing Feat. Just proves the Old Coins are out there waiting for you to go out and locate them. Now get out there and find them hidden spots. Heck! They don't even have to be hidden to be loaded. Good Luck and HH.

Sounds like all you guys did well. Congrats on all that great stuff. I got permission to hunt a yard Wednesday...and I'm goin' rain or shine. I got the afternoon off tommorrow...so I'm diggin...whether it be in mud or dirt.:detecting:

Hope it is Sunny out for you so you don't have the hassle of digging in the mud. Hopefully the yard will have some nice Silver for you. Can't wait to see what you find. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

Nothing like the feeling of doing very well when you may have had thoughts of lesser finds. It surely is a Great Feeling. Thanks for the reply. Good Luck and HH.

Incredible finds.

I've been too busy with work to be digging much; now the grass is tall. Maybe next year.

Hope to see you this summer.

Chris

It was getting late again and all I really cared about was getting this post up so you all could see the finds. Hope you get out sometime and make some nice finds Chris. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

James,

Nice Silver count for sure, but not all of us can spend all weekend every weekend, like you, going metal detecting and putting on hundreds of miles doing it. Sure, I think most of us would love to go as you do, but the majority of us have other commitments and priorities in our lives that prevent us from doing so. I am happy to just get out on occasion for a couple of hours on some Saturday afternoon and find one or two pieces of silver. Maybe you should tell everyone how many miles you have been putting on to get these finds.

Awesome finds!!! You're killing me with all the '24D wheaties you dig! That quarter is seated... the ribbon above the eagle with the motto in god we trust was added to seated quarter in the 1860's. My first seated quarter was about as worn as yours... you can only get better from there! :) Take care and HH, Mike.

Thanks for that bit of info on the Seated Quarters. Sure wish it would have had a date on it. So far, I believe I have found 3 24-d Wheats so far this year, it could be 2 but can't remember. I know I have 2 just in the last 2 weekends. The Coins are out there, just have to do the research and find them hidden spots. Sometimes, the spots are still there but haven't been worked with Explorer's yet. I love those kinds of sites! Good Luck and HH Mike!

You have other responsibilities and have limited time to get out. Most of the time, I only go out Saturday and so far half a day Sunday. You would be surprised what is still in a 100 mile radius from me that has lots of Silver still waiting to be found. The farthest we have gone is around 200 miles but we don't even have to drive 150 to find sites that are producing Old Coins. Lots of potential out there Mike. Hope you are able to find some spots in your area, because I know they exist. Hope to see you at the Hunt Mike and Good Luck and HH.

It was a Shocker for me actually. I always hope to do good when I go out and I figured if I found 5 Silver Saturday, I could possibly get another 5 Silver from that Fairgrounds I have been hitting since Early Fall of last year. But when I started hitting Silver like Clad, then I got excited and really couldn't believe my luck towards the end of the day. You have to remember also that I started detecting 8am on Saturday and only stopped when we went to try some other spots out. We stopped detecting at around 8pm so we detected at least a good 10 hours of the day. 17 hours total with Friday and Sunday included and usually last year I would get out both Saturday and Sunday and start at Sunrise and stop at Sunset both days. It sure was a blast to find that much stuff again. Thanks again for the reply and hope you find some sites loaded like the few we ran into. Good Luck and HH.

I also will go across the Border of Minnesota and South Dakota but haven't been able to pursue it this year due to Gas Prices like I want to. Something has to be done about that. There is tons of potential in North Dakota as well. Lots of Old Fairgrounds and such that yeild Old Coins, just never enough time to go everywhere in a year. Good Luck and HH and thanks for the reply.
