Did some test today.

After reading about the deep sounds of the Etrac I decided to do some testing of my own. It took me about 5 minutes of testing before I can say, I was amazed. The thunking sound was pronounced when you get close to the maximum depth of the Etrac. Heard the thunk sound and looked at the meter and to my amazement a 13-45 appeared on the screen without ever hearing the usual high tone I'm accustomed to.
Switched over to manual sensitivity of 28 and the thunking changed to a more consistent high tone with an occasion thunk in between the usual high tone.
All this got me to thinking of the numerous times in the field when I heard this similar thunking sound and totally ignored it.
Now over the past year I've dug many a good, fairly deep targets down to about 8" not realizing there was something deeper that I've missed.
All this said, a couple days ago I had the opportunity to do target comparisons with a V3i. This machine really intrigues me in a lot of ways. My buddy would find a fairly deep target at 7+ inches and then call me over to check it with the Etrac. At first these target sounded awful to me, the ID numbers were way off from what I would normally dig. At first I thought he had to superior machine until I asked him to turn his off when I checked the target and that made all the difference in sounds and ID numbers. We both learned a lot about our machines that day. Now I have another reason to go back to these old areas and try something new. Run in manual sensitivity, more open screen and listen for the thunking sound instead of the very low volume high tone I was listening for before.

Cool test thanks for the write up and the information.

can you re-do it with the deep on and deep off settings ? and then try some high and low gain,,,, this is good stuff

Very interesting observation indeed. Thank you for bringing up this topic, I will be following it to hear more about it. Merry Christmas and HH -Marc

I wish I'd thought of that, but will make an effort to include those two settings soon.

I may have to get out there today! I own a mid 1800s home and my oldest yard find is 1914. The soil goes quite deep so I'm sure there a some good ones I've passed over.

This is what I found when I first started sharing this information on this forum about the tunk sound. When you run in Auto mode like I do the first times I cover an area from a couple of different directions If that target is real deep this is what I found happening 8" plus deep. When you put it in Manual and raise the sensitivity higher than what it was running at in Auto you will get a better sound from these deep hits with an ocassional tunk just the opposite of Auto. So yes I think it's reaching the depth of it's detectable range in that sensitivity or the target is on edge or very slanted in the ground. Try that out with your friends V3i on a really deep target over 8" deep and see then I bet the Etrac will win out the deeper it gets

Also when you open up the discrimination screen and try it out over that same target it will give a better read and sounds too instead of the tunking as much. I think discrimination is somewhat needed when we hunt but it does effect the machine some what on deepies but still allows the Etrac to find them.

Haven't tried with deep on yet I just started to run it that way at the end of this season so I will keep on it and see what that does for it. I think it just helps with the ID only. The Gain makes the deeper signals amplified so it sounds louder like a shallow target does.
