Difference between the Quattro and X-terra's ?

Beggars Tomb

New member
I am looking for a detector that will be good on mainly coin shooting and jewelry (beachhunting), some Relic hunting and maybe a little Gold nugget shooting but not alot. Can anyone give me soem main differences of these machines. Is the x-terra 70 just a BETTER x-terra 50, sam features. Does the x-terra 70 have the problem of shutting itself off like I read on the previous thread ? What is the quattro good for hunting ? Any Ifo appreciated.

Hi Beggars...

Someone did a very comprehensive comparison of the Quattro and X-terras a few weeks back. Do a search of the forum and ye shall find.

My highly informal take on the X-terras lineup is the following:

XT-30 Good beginner to mid-range coin shooter
XT-50 Hi-range coin shooter and mid-range relic machine
XT-70 Hi-range coin shooter and hi-range relic machine with saltwater beach mode. The versatility introduced with this model is some the best overall that I have ever seen in a detector.

I bought the XT-70 since the beach mode was of high importance to me. Its prospecting mode is quickly becoming a very desirable feature for me.

As for stability and the battery issues, after about 20 hours of XT-70 use on the beach, I've had none of the problems that have been noted by some folks here. I can't say it won't happen but so far I am very happy with the unit. Not the end all, be all but until they bring out the Explorer/Quattro in the same casing and new features, it is a bloody excellent machine worthy of replacing my Fisher CZ-70 as my primary detector.

Well, to start off with, The Quality of the XT70 is not as good as the Quattro, the depth of the 70 isn't close to the Quattro in my soil. The Target ID isn't quite as solid on the XT70 as it is on the Quattro, but your talking a single frequency versus 28 frequencies of the Quattro.

Now just speaking on the Quattro, it's a great beach & relic machine and even a decent coin machine. In my soil, it will hit targets at 12+ inches with no problem. I love the graphic pinpoint feature of the machine, But, it's a heavy beast at close to 5 pounds with batteries and stock DD coil. It's about worthless in trashy areas or parks & ballfields and such due to having a Vvvvvvery slow target recovery speed. You actually have to stop swinging and allow the processor to reset itself after each target if not then you WILL miss targets completely. Also the tones take a little getting used to.

Now, the Xterra 70 is very light at less then 2.9 pounds, it's great at the beach the same as the Quattro, but probably 2 pounds lighter for all day swingin. To me the ID isn't quite as accurate as the Quattro and the depth aint even close to the Quattro. I would put the depth at about equal to the CZ5's, CZ3d's, Cortes & Garrett GT&i's. Plus the 70 has a super fast target processor so you can swing it fast or slow and not miss any targets. I used my 70 at a comp hunt last month and it worked great. But there were 3 or 4 guys using Quattro's at the comp hunt and they were gettin pretty frustrated with them and the slow recovery time.

Now when I say the Quality isn't as good as the Quattro, it's not a put down on the XT70, BUT I think they had to sacrafice a certain amount of solid construction in order to make it light. The construction on the Quattro is great, built like a tank, but weighs like it as well.

I have ownned 3 Cortez in the last few years and I really have to say that your comparing the Cz's to the Cortez in depth is not even in the ball park. Every CZ I have owned went deeper than any Cortez I owned. I am curious as to what kind of depth you are getting on your Cortez and CZ'. I had an Explorer for a while but did not like it and traded it off so I cannot speak of the Quatro or Explorer depth. I do not mean for this to be an issue thing just curious as to what kind of depth you were getting on the CZ and Cortez.

Mike have you tried a smaller coil on your Quattro. I have just started using a Joey and find it very good as far as weight goes. Also in trashy areas with high trash setting it does great, resets quickly enough for me and I have found coins in areas that the 10.5 inch coil couldn't due to the heavy infestation of trash.

The XT 70 is one of the BEST all around detectors made. It's versatility, especially now with the 5" x 10" DD 18.75kHz coil availability is unmatched. The 2.9 lbs. is no less an important feature as well. I have several customers, just elated with the machine. Quattro, and Explorer II are just on a whole other level, and really can't be compared against the XT 70. The depth and target capability of the FBS machines (28 simultaneous frequencies) are in another galaxy, far far away:stars:!

but it also cut the depth by a good two inches with the smaller coil as well. I tried running high trash density, which helped, but it still has such a lag that it was almost useless for parks & sporting fields where I do a lot of hunting. Which was ashame because I really liked the Quattro.

and I would get 8-9" depths on my Cortes & CZ's, except the CZ70, which would get a good 10 + inches, but that depends on soil conditions, target, how long it's been in the ground and so forth. But no, the CZ5 nor the 3d was any deeper that I found then the Cortes, and I'm a big time Fisher CZ fan. Now, the Coinstrike is pretty much equal to the depth of the Quattro in my area, but this can vary depending on conditions.

Seems like a positive discussion of the Quattro. Usually you hear how slow the sweep speed is and how heavy the unit is. I do believe that the multi-freq machines are deeper.

but, sometimes you have to give up a little of the other in order to get reliable ID at depth. So you will have to deal with a slower sweep speed.
