Digging Tool

Just returning to this hobby after over 20 years. Just bought an E-Trac and took it out for a short tryout. It came with a trowel type digging tool. Years ago I just used a hunting knife with a 7" blade which worked a lot better than this "trowel". The knife cuts a clean edge hole while this trowel pretty well butchered up the hole.

What are most of you using? I can't locate my old knife so I'm planning on buying a new one.

For me, it pretty much depends on where I"m hunting followed by ground conditions. I used to use the hunting knife myself, but finally gave up on them after breaking a number of blades in tough ground. For parks and school yards where I want neat holes and plugs, I use a thin, sharp, small trowel and for shallow finds, a screwdriver. For field digging, I use a Predator Little Eagle. I bought a treasure wise blue handled digging tool this year its built like a big bowie knife that is concave and has an edge for cutting roots and it cuts through roots like butter. It is a great tool and real sturdy. I have pry-ed out rocks and it doesn't even flex.

I use a Lesche that has taken a beating and is still going. For a little deeper digging I use the longer handle Wilcox diggers. They are built tough too. For the bigger jobs I started out with the ground shark shovel and liked it so much I added the other models. It was nice to upgrade to high quality digging tools - well worth it to me.

A Nebraska Sod Buster is hard to beat. I have pryed a semi out of the ground with mine. It was a toy but anyway the Sod Buster will probably be the last digger you buy. Best one I've used. They cost about $25-$30. Shop around. Good luck.

I have a Lesche and like it. I also own a Predator Tools digger, It is the Hercules model. I like both of them, Beale.

I had been detecting since 1984 and really just used whatever I had to dig with. A few years ago I bought a few detecting specific diggers from various companies. All were OK but not great. I had heard about George Lesche tools but didn't want to shell out $40.00 for a digger. About 2 years ago I decided to order the Lesche digger. All I can say is that it's worth every single penny! There are copies running around. But if you want a tool made by George Lesche you have to buy a Predator tool.

I made my own. It is what some would call a "long handled trowel."

Plenty of leverage and clean holes.

I also have an old Lesche tool. It was bought in the 90's and has been through a lot. I've even used it to pry rocks I'll be buying a new one just because I want another style and want one as a back up digging tool for my friends. Love that shovel!! But if you are digging in a nice park or manicured lawn, then you need a smaller digging tool. I hunt in the woods, with lots of roots and rocks, so I need the monster shovel.

I use a tool similar to the one with the blue handle pictured above, it is a Japanese Garden Knife, has serrated edge with a concave blade. Works great, have one for 20 years and still works great.
