Digging tools

HI TO ALL
I'm a newbie to this hobby, just started last June.
I have a question? What is the deference if I use a diving knife or a digging tool?
Someone said that using a knife could get you in trouble with the law if you use it in town to dig with??????

I don't use the knife method, but I have friends who do and the knife does cut a nice clean plug that looks nice when replaced. We use the trowel type, 2". My wife and I detect schools and parks quite often and a 10 to 12 inch knife strapped to our legs would not be a very good image to our hobby. I could see where you would get in trouble with it around schools and the police could question your use on public property too. Here in the States, we DO have the right to bear arms, but is it worth it? City codes and laws may vary.
