DIGS O' THE DAY

Nice finds!!!!

Nice finds and story LMC. That "suspender buckle" looks a lot like a clip from a hose supporter. I found one at the tree farm. It was marked Velvet Grip. I found an ad for it and posted it. Here is is. See if that one you found has any writing on it.

A cup of coffee and a good read for a MD'ing nut is better than the newspaper. A lot more interesting and no bad world news.
Are there any old plantation houses to MD out some dirt road in your area? I know when I lived in SC. you could find some in ruins down some forgotten road. I had a friend that live in part of one and about froze to deaf. His only heat was from the fire places.

Awhitster, you're right, and I stand corrected. "Hose supporter" would've probably been more accurate nomenclature, but I tend to use a generic "suspender buckle" label for a lot of those clothing fasteners that look like that, even when it turns out to be technically inaccurate at times (like in this case). Sometimes it's hard for me to guess what exact function a lot of these little clothing fasteners like this once had. For this reason, I love how you sleuth out all those old ads that correspond to your finds- it really breathes life into them. I'll have to check for an inscription on that one.

I'm with you there, John- I much prefer to know what was going on in Yesteryear than what is happening in the Middle East and elsewhere today. I've always been a "Living In The Past" kind of guy (that happens to be the title of one of my favorite Jethro Tull albums). As to old ruins, I have been lucky enough to hunt some such sites and have done pretty well. But more often, the antebellum homesites we hunt are nothing but pine barrens nowadays, with all traces of any houses having long since vanished. We usually hunt them when the 'dozers are active, clearcutting or plowing the sites for construction.

Well written.Silver is waiting for you.

Hi there. My parents are the couple from Atlanta. I found your posting by accident and wanted to ask you to not to call our houses vacant and then post pictures of them. I completely understand that it is your right to describe the state of our homes and give your opinions about them. That's what free speech is all about. Although, to be honest, my mother does feel rather hurt after I read her your comments. I'm not trying to upset you or cause problems in any sort of way, but it's self-explanatory why we don't want anyone to know that no one is currently living in them. That's a rather a moot point for Halifax given the current state of events, but the other properties still have a chance. As your postings stand, and though the chance is admittedly rare, someone could easily identify which houses are ours and take advantage of the situation. Since we've had numerous break-ins in the past (even when we were occupying them) despite security systems, I hope you can understand why we are nervous. I know that if you had an even inkling about this possible outcome you would have been more careful with your postings. If anything were to happen, we would hate to have to accuse you of any negligence. If you could remedy the situation by altering your posts, my family would very much appreciate it and it would set my parents' minds at rest. Thank you so much.
