Dimes never EVER register as dimes ?

JASONSPAZ1

I have had my GTAx-1250 for a while and it has served me very well. I had it recalibrated in 2006 and have always taken care of it. But why in the world do dimes never EVER register as dimes on the GTA meter? Clad dimes, seated dimes, mercury dimes , barber dimes, and even dime sized Spanish reales never register as dimes. weather it be as and air test or in the ground, dimes always register right beneath the 1cent icon. I have tried to test with the sensitivity at its lowest middle and highest settings but dimes still don't register as dimes.Even with various coils it is still the same, Nickles and quarters are always dead on accurate? Has anyone else ever experienced this problem? Actually in general the GTA meter readings seem to be way off except for nickles and quarters.

Thanks in advance
Jason

When I was new almost every dime registered on the one cent notch on my 2500. As I got better at pinpointing more and more showed up on the dime notch. I'd say now about 60 percent ring up as a copper penny (notch :geek:, the other 40 percent on the notch above which would be low dime (notch 8.5) I guess. Notch 9 is in between dime and quarter and is sometimes a quarter, almost never a dime, and is also a good ring notch for me. Most of my larger silver rings hit there.

FWIW, I still dig more dimes than copper pennies and I dig every signal on notch 8.5. I dig fewer zinc cents than copper pennies and I dig almost every signal on that notch too. Once in a while I skip them or notch them out late in the day. Not very often in 2009, though, as I limited my hunts to about 2 hours going for quality hunts rather than quantity. I got both, btw.

PS I know you're no nub so I assume it's your machine. As long as you know what it's telling you, no problem. Did the recalibration help? I'm thinking of sending mine in this winter.

My 1250 acts the same way you described your 2500. It is only 2 days into the snow and I am getting cabin fever, getting paranoid reviewing my equipment...LOL
Yes it is my 1250, and it fits the bill when I am not swinging my Sovereign GT. Soooooo many times have I contemplated selling my 1250, but I cant do it. I had the GTP-1350 and sold it to track down this 1250 that I now own. I hated the profile button on the GTP-1350, constantly having to press the profile button to make sure I am not in profile mode. In the end you are correct. Even though dimes don't always register in the 10cent icon, it still registers as a coin thus being a target to be dug.

Thanks for the info
take care

Did your detector come back from recalibration any better? Did it perform better afterwards? How much did it cost?

Chris

Actually I did not send it in yet. I sent it in winter of 2006 for a replacement LCD, which made my 1250 look brand new. Garrett told me they went ahead and recalibrated the machine in addition to fixing the LCD. When I got it back I don't remember anything working better, worse, or bad. It seems as though I just recently noticed that dimes very rarely register as 10cent.
My 1250 was one of the models that shipped with the 8.5 Crossfire II coils. In 2007 I put on the 7x10 Proformance coil, and the 10x12 Proformance coils. I wonder if the machine is a little off due to the different coils?
I am going to send it in after the Holidays for a look over from Garrett, and I will specifically mention my inconsistent target id readings. Honestly, I would like someone out there in forum land to tell me if they know what EXACTLY Garrett does to "recalibrate" a machine. And now I am wondering if I have to send in all my searchcoils.
Or in the end is my OCD getting a hold of me. The biggest challenge this winter while in the process of purchasing a new home is to stop myself from obsessing that I need a new detector....LOL

take care

I keep thinking about a new machine too and eventually get back to asking myself why mess with something that is working so well. I would spring for a new top end Garrett if it had significant upgrades in technology.

I just gave my 2500 it's end of season bath (and wax) this morning and I'm going to get in touch with Garrett in early 2010 and decide if I should send the old girl in for a tune up. I'll post what I figure out and hope you will do the same.

Chris

Let me know what Garrett says please. Or is one year
for the GTI1500 not enuff to worry about recalibration?

Thanks

You might contact Garrett and see if that new coil needs to be tuned to your detector. Due to the early date of manufacture it might be a little off, but the 1250/1350/2500 are all the same detector aside from profiling and imaging. Did you have that problem with your 1350?

I can have dimes register any where from just below the penny icon to the quarter icon. The most important indication is the bell tone sound. Most of the time if I get the bell tone sound in the penny range, it is either a penny right on the surface, or a dime if down a few inches. Next to pennys, dimes are what I find the most of.

also, here are my suggestions for coin hunting with the 1250
1) set on either the coin or jewelry mode and set the sensitivity between 6-7. The lower sensitivity does a good job of discrimination but will still allow you to find coins down to about 4 inches, so you will get more coins per target beep.
2) after I search an area in the above configuration I then switch to zero discrimination and push the sensitivity up to around 9 and then go back over the area very slowly. this tends to find a few more deeper coins plus helps to teach more about how the machine works.
Remember the sound and how the ID moves around are the most important indicators of what you will find.

good hunting
