DIY Pin Pointer

I have been searching the forums for a nice diy pin pointer, but haven't found anything really worth building. I have found the one where you buy that stud finder from where and mod it, but it just didn't seem that it was going to do it for me. So being the net tech, (I own a computer technology company) I started to look in the dark recesses of the internet and finally found one that looks very promising. I think i will build both coil's as I believe that the dual round coil will get a little more depth. I will start building it in the next week and when i am done i will let you guys know how it works and post some pics and findings.

Interesting design...Will be interested in knowing how much depth it can get, and how you wind your coils...

I figured i would upload all the pics that i have of this design, if anyone wants to build it then let us know how you did. i am not an expert in circuit design, I'm not even sure what some of the parts are, i have a couple of people looking at the design to figure out what parts are needed but in the case you know what they are then please post a parts list for us novice people. but anyways here are the PCB, PCB picture overlay, and the schematics again.

actually i have just come across those recently, the first one looks promising, but the last one talks about "MW radio aerial" and i have no clue what it is. I did Google it and came across short wave amateur radio sites. so i think i will just take up an offer on another forum and have him mail me his automax v4 for free and just pay the shipping. then i will take that one and "beef" it up to get better signal out of it. I have heard that its not all that great but you cans sometimes take not great and make it better. if it don't work then back to the drawing board. wish me luck.

Yes i belong to that forum, i have seen those plans but the good ones are in another language. someone from another forum gave me a automax v4 pin pointer, i will play with that and see if i can get more out of it. The design is very basic at best so im sure there would be something i can do with it, maybe just playing with the coil on it might help but then again maybe not. but thanks for the effort.
 
So here's what I did. I ordered a handful of pager vibrators off E-bay, where else :wiggle:, Yesterday I pulled the wires off of the little buzzer on my Harbor Freight pinpointer and soldered 'em to the vibrator, and J.B. Quick glued the thing inside the housing. I was amazed! It just turned the cheapo pinpointer right around. It works pretty good now. Good enough, if I hadn't already ordered a "Propointer" on E-bay for $127.50, I might have delayed ordering until test have been made. Give it a try, you'll be impressed! My opinion, of course. ;) Happy Camper!
 
Hello I'm curious to know if the harbor freight is the little detector that has a long probe and sells for about $16.00? I'm considering one to use as a pin pointer.. when you put the vibrator in does it only vibrate or do you get any sound??? thanks Lloyd
 
Let me lay this thing to rest..........! I say now, there is no comparison in all these pin pointers and the Garrett Propointer. They're better than nothing.........but by comparison, little more (my opinion) You layed out $600-800 for your detector, didn't you? Why use a dog pinpointer. Hey, I didn't listen either. It's the old story, why drive the Ford, if there's a Chevvy setting next to it ?
 
What is your point silversmith and what are you talking about. First of all this discussion is about a DIY Pinpointer, nothing else. It's not about what one is better than the garrett. It's about a simple DIY pinpointer. You might have spent 600 to 800 on your detector and that's fine, some of us didn't, but again that's not the point. The point is it's a DIY project, and another thing do you really think it's a "dog" pinpointer even if you have never used it or seen it, wow how rude is that. Next time read the whole story instead of just a couple of post's, that might get you a little further along in the conversation.
 
GOODNESS SAKE, '1972. Do you feel better now? I went through this "cheap pinpointer" thing about 6 months ago, myself. I bought, modified and in the end found I'd spent enough of my hard earned money to own a Great pinpointer and not be stuck with a pinpointer wanta-a-be. Good guys advised of my seemingly bad judgement, and I laid down my cash for less than I could have had. When the subject comes up I always comment about it. Now, if you don't like it, too bad. That's all I got to say about it, for now. Let's try to not let this really great web site turn into a war zone. So spin your "VFO" and I'll spin mine..........:wacko:
 
I could say the same about my uniprobe compared to your garrett probe, its a similar comparison, but what we have here is a $3 bit of kit that is equally as good as the cheap ones for sale at $25, i have uniprobe and the sunray for the etrac but i still built one of these and enjoyed every minute of it, something to do on your days when you can't get out that is better than watching telly, some people dont have the 80-100 bucks to get a garret wana-be Uniprobe and are gratefull for this little gadget, others like me just like tinkering with things and are delighted when it works
