i'm talking 8"+ coins. do they give a solid belltone or do id a little lower and you just have to know what they sound like?

Mike, If I rememeber correctly the deepest coins (and on edge coins too) gave kind of a mixed high tone - belltone but it wouldn't break through every time you scanned the target. The detector would struggle a little but you knew something was there. Targets like that you will not get any more than a very slight hum in pinpoint, if you get any sound at all. Also, your ID might jump all over the place.
That is likely only a very small % of targets. Most others will belltone each way and read properly. I haven't used a GTI in quite a while but when I did it was hunting feilds where digging deep holes and iffys wasn't a problem. Another good hint to a deep coin is when you have a very good two way belltone and your image won't size but just flashes. Usually that indicates great coin size target over 6" <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

Mike, C.C. is right about the jumping and mixed signals. When a target gets to a certain depth, with certain detectors, it gets beyond the ID capabilites.
But it is still telling you something is there.
When in doubt, "DIG", and you will get some nice surprises. A good way to learn your detector and what it is trying to tell you.
One thing that happens, you might get the belltone one way and an iron signal the other, if the higher tone keeps coming in on the one way sweep, pinpoint and dig to check it.
It is a good machine, and you can also put it in All-Metal to get a little more depth, or tell you if a target is there when the ID mode is barely able to pick it up.
Good Luck with it.
