Do I need the 8" coil?

Hi, everyone. I just bought my first explorer, an older XS that comes with an FBS 1050 black coil, and I was wondering if I would need to get an 8" coil as well, or if it would be redundant. Thanks!

Hello Amustel

I like mine, it's the minelab FBS one and works well in trashy areas and covers a little more area than say a 5 or 6 incher.
I've never used an aftermarket coil yet, just the Pro and 8 in so far.
But plan on trying some because of Bryces' reviews.
Another area where the 8 in comes in handy is wooded areas, no hanging up in tall grass and such. good for scanning overgrown areas.

Good Luck,
Ron

You will be surprised how much an 8" coil can pick out of the trash/iron that the 1050 can't see. I use the Sunray X-8 and have also used the FBS 8" coil.
Both are equal but the Sunray is much lighter. The depth is amazing for an 8" coil too and you'll probably end up using it more than the stock coil if you have trash and iron like I have to hunt in.

Thanks to all who responded. I was wrong since I believed that if I purchase a 5" coil, I would'nt need the 8" one besides the fbs 1050.
Finally...are all the coils for Explorer suitable for the XS? By instance, coils for the newer models like SE would work with the xs?

Excellent article, Bryce...do you have a web site with more reports, articles or general stuff about the Explorer detectors?

All explorer and E-trac coils are interchangeable.

As for a website...nope...just the field test post at the top of this page that has all the different hunts and test links in it.

Good luck hunting.

jumping over from the etrac forum for a minute here. I thought my old yard was cleaned out until I went over it with my sun ray x-8. i was amazed. 8" coil is worth every penny.
