Do you all hunt the same places every year, or do you keep traveling further to expanding your search area?

The reason I ask is that you Minelab guys find by far the most stuff out of anybody. I hunt with 5 Minelab guys that have been detecting for about 30 years and they travel 30+ miles just to go to a hunt site several times a week. They are a great bunch of guys, every time I see them they point me to places where they think I will be able to find some stuff and every time they were right. At the end of the day we all show off our finds, and every time they pull out a hand full of Wheat's, 4 or 5 Injun Heads, and a few silver. While I usually get only a couple of Wheaties and an occasional Injun or a Merc. They keep telling me that I have to get an Explorer before its too late.

I know that when new coils and new machines come out, that enables you to hunt deeper so you can go over your old sites again. But at some point your going to have to travel super far and the finds wont be worth the trip. I live about 15 miles from one of their favorite sites and I am amazed at what they pull from the ground every time I see them, that's why I am upgrading to an Explorer so I can try and get a piece of the prize until its all hunted out. It seems that every site that I go, the other hunters all say "the minelab guys hunted this place to death". I found some stuff over the past few months, but it pales in comparison to just one of your hunts.

I have been detecting for 40 years now and have hunted all around the world. I still find silver and old coins in my local park. I started hunting this park in 1968 when I started Metal Detecting. So, as equipment get better the stuff that was to deep back then will appear today. And yes, I still travel to go detecting. I love it, just as that 15 year old boy back in 1968 did. So Have fun and enjoy yourself. HH...Jesse.

Once the Explorer's have worked an area, GOOD LUCK trying to find anything, and in quantity. If an Experienced Explorer User works a Pattern at a site and is consistent with it, you will find it to be a very hard task to recover anything Old for Coins or whatever you are interested in looking for. The only thing that will be left behind for the most part will be lots of Trash, and the occassional Gold item that most Explorer User's leave behind due to having to dig all Conductive Targets in order to land a Gold item. There will be a few Old Coins that will be next to Iron or just got missed totally on a swing, but for the most part, that site will be Worked Out. So if you intend on getting some of that Pie, better hurry up and get an Explorer, or you will definetly be left with only some of the Crust. As far as going far distances and the finds not worth the amount of money you put into it, Who Cares! The reason we venture out is because we like making them Old Finds and it doesn't matter if it pays off in the end, at least you had FUN finding what you did. It's like Fishing. If you travel 100 miles to a Lake with a Boat and used a Diesel Pick-Up to haul it, at $4.50 a Gallon and an average of 14 miles to that Gallon just to go there, that alone would hurt the pocket book and really not be worth it. Then you take the Boat out and burn up a Tank of Gas at $3.98 a Gallon and the Boat holds 50 Gallons (not sure what a typical Boat holds), and you only caught 5 Fish all day, NOW THAT is some Expensive Fish per Pound! The point is to go have FUN and ENJOY what your HOBBY is and not worry about if you broke even or are ahead, because if a lot of us thought that way, there sure wouldn't be many Explorer User's out and about making finds and posting them here. Just have fun! And Yes, you have to venture out further and further due to finds getting harder and harder to make. Hope this helps and Good Luck and HH to you when you get your Explorer.

JAMES---That's a good post you made-I like that.--I've said for a long time---"the reason I like Explorers is because I can find stuff (old & deep coins) with them".---If we guaged each fish we caught or each old coin (most old coins) we recovered by what it cost to get them---well, in most cases we would be better off going to the fish market or the coin shop.---But that's not the point at all, is it?---Each & every old coin I recover-I cherish-it's like a "museum piece" to me--a piece of American history that's ireplaceable. When they come up out of the ground-that's it "no mas".--No more of them will EVER go back in the ground for us to re-cover.--I have never and do not ever plan on getting rid of a single old coin I find--and to me-an old coin is 1964 on back silver or 1958 on back "wheaties".---The price of gas isn't going to stop me (and I'm sure not rich).--I'm 69-what-- I'm going to wait 10 years hopeing gas prices will go down a little?? I don't think so! Even you younger guy's shouldn't try to "wait it out"on gas prices, it probably isn't going to get much better.---Metal detecting is the ONLY hobby I've ever had that I really & truly love & even $10 gas isn't going to stop me.--The only thing that might stop me is my health.--Even my WIFE isn't going to stop me!! Because she loves the hobby as much as I do.--So if travel is what it takes to get 'em (old coins)--"so be it".--At the same time though--we have to realize that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence--sometimes right where you are at IS the other side of the fence.---By & large though--I've got places I want to hunt-and it involves travel.-----Thanks for reading my "book", Del

Detecting is meant to be FUN and FUN I shall have, no matter what the price is! Good Luck and HH.:detecting:
