Do you like your F5?

Hey Fisher folks. I been out of the detecting loop for quite awhile but resently have been bite by the bug again. I've used Whites,Tesoro's, minelabs, Garretts, and even bounty hunters but never a fisher. Well I think I might want to try the F5. How do you like yours?

I like mine a lot. I found lots of goodies with it in only 1 year. IMHO it has one of the most readable (as in big numbers) and comprehensive display of any detector out there. The info is all there and neatly organized. I like the live ground phase readout. Some people don't like the rotary controls, I do. It provides almost infinite adjustments on the fly. Things I don't care for: It uses 2 X 9 volt batteries (they do last a long time though). I also dislike how awkward it is to change coils with the clumsy recessed coil threads. First Texas have it right on the F5's brother (the Omega) although the Omega has a flimsy control box. I consider these relatively minor annoyances. It's a great detector overall and it's a silver magnet.

Now if First Texas could put a backlight and iron audio on this thing, it would be even better.

I believe the F5 is an almost perfect detector for coin detecting. It is very accurate and suprisingly deep when adjusted "hot". The controls are in my opinion the best design of any detector made, with everything in front of you on a large screen. As the other fellow said, it takes two 9 volt batteries which are more expensive than AA's. The battery life has proven to be over 30 hours on my F5. I also equipped mine with the 11 inch dd coil. I dig very few steel bottle caps and you can use the standard lift the coil as you are swinging to see if the numbers change dramatically as you get higher above the ground. I routinely find coins in the 8 inch range. If you can set the threshold at 0 and the gain in the 85 range, this detector will surprise you depth wise. At these settings, the detector will chirp when I set it down to dig, but quickly becomes quiet when I start swinging. I run the disc at 15 to eliminate iron and I dig hardly any deep rusty items. I absolutely love this detector and I find myself using it over the other "high priced" unit.

I would say you couldn't go wrong with the F5, I would suggest going with 11"DD coil over the 10" concentric.

Sweet machine. Very durable and it works well in any weather condition. The control panel reminds me of a race car's dash panel. You'll love this machine but you'll probably have to buy a new one, nobody wants to sell their old one.

Will let you know later, I just got mine a few days ago, already falling in love with it, seems like there is also a lot knowledgeable helpful friendly people here, so you'll have that going for it as well.
happy digging

more and more every day, I learn something new this machine is capable of doing every time out.

I think you should air test it for the best settings, I did my brothers a couple of years back and I think he is still running those settings.

already did, now real world testing

coin pirate, just curious about your air tests. What did they tell you regarding sens/threshold settings vs depth ?

I was mainly looking at the 2 digit to see where the different metals and sizes fell into, I started out with -3 and max sens
but I've been have most of the best readings at +3, 65%, 1 tone, AM, using disc to verify suspicions extra tones when the
signal won't hold and jumps around when mixed with tabs or nails. with these setting in my highly mineralized ground and
very trashy, seems to work best. When the soil is less mineral deposited, I drop closer to 0, up the sens to 85-100%, 1 or 2 tone
and still AM using disc to verify. I ground balance frequently while in AM, helps keep the noise a little less.
I've yet to start using the headphones to try and catch the fainter signals, just got my pro pointer today, so, should go a little quicker now.

Head phones is a must, I just bought a new set of grey ghost ultimate head phones and they are super nice. Those faint deep silver targets are not easily heard, that's where a good set of quality head phones can really make a difference.
