Does anybody have a source for waterproof potentiometers? I need about 4-5 of them.

Go to www.digi-key.com they carry hexseal nuts to replace the nuts that hold the pot's in place. This will waterproof the pot's.
At least they use to carry them. I haven't looked for a while.
One can also use Vishay Cermet, (my poor spelling) pot's. There good for about 4' water depth.

I would like to know if the washable pots are waterproof and can they be used under water? Thanks William

Hi Bob,
If you use Hexseals, make sure that the pots have either a round plastic shaft, preferably Nylon, or a brass shaft, preferably Nickel plated. Some pots have plated steel shafts which will quickly corrode and rust, and will destroy the seal. Stainless steel shafts are generally OK, although even some of these rust in seawater; depends on the grade. APEM Hexseals are very good and I have used them on many underwater detectors.
Another couple of hints - always check that pot shafts are free of scratches in the contact area of the seal. I always examine the shaft with a magnifier. A smear of silicon grease on the shaft before the seal is fitted makes things run smooth.
Just thought of another point. The threaded bush on the pot only wants to be about 3mm into the Hexseal. Much further, and it will push against the seal and balloon it out, thereby causing it to lose proper contact with the shaft. Use spacers behind the pot to achieve this, if necessary.
Eric.

That is what I would like to know if these washable pots can handle being submerged in water without leaking. I see them all the time in digikey catalog, bourns has them , the description will say withstands typical industrial washing or just washable and that they are sealed. Thanks William

Vishay P16s at Mouser.com IP67 rating which is good to about 4 feet. I have used these with no problems or mil-spec grade pots with stainless shafts and hexseals as stated above. I wouldn't recommend either for diving but for working the surf with an occasional dunking or in inclement weather they are fine.

Bob
